achievements.
• Seaforth native Ken R.
"Pinky" Hogg, 67, of
"Trenton, has put in 950 jumps
in his career as a "para -rescue
specialist" across Canada
with Search and Rescue
squadrons before retiring in
1982. He's worked at Armed
Forces bases in Vancouver
Island, Winnipeg. "Trenton
and Greenwood.
An ankle injury prevented
hint from reaching the 1,000 -

He joined the Armed..
(Forces in 1948 and spent
three years as a paratrooper
before joining the Air Force
in 1952 and "was pretty well

parachuting right from the
start.

Jumping at Crash Sites
"if they find a crash and
there's no way of getting into
it, they throw us in," said
Hogg in a telephone inter-
view from his- home in
Trenton.
The sites Pinky jumped inter
were often heavily wooded,
mountainous and remote.

high-altitude jump in the
mountains of British
Columbia at 9,0(0 feet.
"We got a couple of people
out." On each of the mis-
sions. two para -rescue spe-
cialists jtirnp to the crash site.
Another mission north of
Watson Lake in the, Yukon
where they rescued a man
was difficult because of "the
weird winds."
To get out of these remote
locations, the jump team usu-
ally walks to a cicaring.and
waits for a helicopter to pick
them up and any survivors.
Most of his other opera-
tional jumps were "body -hag
work.'.
Pinky admits •he misses
jumping but he still keeps
busy as the part-time com-
missionaire at the Kase in
Trenton.

Drop in and -Visit
One of his last most memo-
rable visits to Seaforth was in
May 1980 when he parachut-
ed in from a Hercules plane
to visit his sister Doreen
Brightall, of Harpuncey, who
was working at Seaforth
Public School at the time.
-We-were having an exer-
cise out of London. I)oreen's
husband Don was sick at the
time sit i talked the pilot into
dropping me off over
Seaforth. 1 was going to land
in the field hchind Doreen's
place hut what i had used for
a target had moved. So i said
to the load master. 'where the
heck did my target go?' Just.
before 1 left thc•door he said
'it might he hulls.' With my
red 'chute on. i got about half
way down and said 'the hell
with this'."
And even though he didn't
want to land right in the
schoolyard with all the kids
around, it was a better option
than being chased by a hull.
"The children were so
thrilled," said his sister.
Doreen.
A, helicopter landed
Hopper's. air field
Harpurhey later to pick up
Pinky and fly him hack to
London. -
