BUNGEE MANIA - Greg de Vries, right, goes airborne as he's pulled backwards by the force of the bungee cord at the
Moonlight Madness Bungee Run on Friday night. Daniel Nash, left, also tried out the device. Participants ran as far as
they could hamessed to the bungee cord before it flung them backwards. It was one of many activities at the annual sum-
mer celebration.
St. Columban Brother. honoured
An article honouring the
work of Brother Francis
O'Reilly, originally of St.
Columban, recently
appeared in The Lasallian, a
publication by the Brothers
of De La Salle.
The article, which was
brought to the Huron
Expositor by Francis' brother
Lou O'Reilly of Seaforth,
tells about how Brother
O'Reilly began his teaching
career at St. Mary's School in
Toronto.
"Hc showed the marks of
an excellent Itweher from the
very beginning - a well run
classroom. good relations
t , dents, and a sense of
p ".ecorum at all times,"
said his first principal,
Brother Joseph Ford.
"He was quickly appointed
moderator of the school's
drum and bugle corps and
after just five years as teacher
Frank assumed the role of
teacher -principal at St.
Clare's," states the article.
He was then assigned to the
Cardinal Newman High
School in Montreal where he
spent 27 years teaching.
The article in The Lasallian
talks about Brother O'Reilly
growing up on a farm in St.
Columban.
BROTHER FRANCIS
O'REILLY - Is pictured here
with a class from St. Mary's
School in Toronto in 1945.
"He was the third child of
five (four boys and one girl).
Tragedy struck his family
early. At age 37 his father
died, probably from working
too hard on the family farm.
The children were five (Joe,
now deceased), four (Lou),
three (Frank), two (Mary)
and one (Basil, now
deceased). So it was that
Frank grew up in a home
with mother, grandmother
and his brothers and sister."
When he left his family to
go to high school in Auro}a,
it was "a painful experience"
according to the article.
His brother Lou said Frank
was 13 when he left for
Aurora and wasn't allowed to
come home for five years.
From there he entered the De
La Salle Novitiate to train to
he a Brother. The school is
now closed. -
His years at Cardinal
Newman formed "the bulk of
Frank's apostolic career."
"While he tends to explain
his success in the classroom
and directing activities to the
privilege of having outstand-
ing students, it is clear that
dedication and expertise
played the important part. It
is interesting to note that for
a short time he held down a
post in administration at
Newman. But given the
Opportunity to return to the
classroom he opted for his
first love."
He also served as Dircctor
of the Newman community
