Sweet Bird sizzles at
Stratford Festival

If you see one play at
Stratford this summer make it
Tennessee Williams' Sweet
Bird of Youth.
This riveting three -act
drama at the Tom Patterson
Theatre features the impecca-
ble Martha Henry as Princess
Kosmonopolis. Amazingly,
the only thing she wears for
the entire first act is a bed
sheet. She retraces her steps
from a big bender to try and
identify her bed partner.
Chance Wayne played by
Geordie Johnson.
Kosmonopolis, a pseudo-
nym for an aging actress, is
hiding out from the world
after an- attempted comeback
on the big screen which she's
convinced herself is a failure.
Wayne is an unsuccessful
actor who has found more
success over the years pick-
ing up women.
He has a grand scheme to
return to his home -town in
the south, find his old girl-
friend, Heavenly Finley
(Martha Burns), and return to
Hollywood to star in a movie

aging starlet.
What awaits Chance in his
hometown is the angry Boss
Finley (Lewis Gordon),
father of Heavenly, and his
son Tom Junior, who at the
very least want to run Chance
out of town and castrate him
if he sticks around.
Their rage stems from
Wayne causing Heavenly to
have "a whore's operation."
Chance is a desperate char-
acter, clinging to the past.
But at least he stands up as a
moral voice against the
racism of Boss Finley, who is
running for election and
doesn't want any scandals
involving his daughter to
resurface.
Both the casting and acting
in this tension -filled drama
are just incredible.
In some instances, Henry is
like the old silent screen star
in Sunset Boulevard, who
clings desperately to a
younger man she hopes to
regain her success and youth
through. However, at some
point in the play, the tables
are turned.
This is a gritty play with
true-to-life dialogue that
makes the audience seem like
a voyeur into some treachery
