Workshops to
study county
landfill options
scheduled for
today
Some county consultants
are down in the dumps these
days.
Waste Management Master
Plan co-ordinator Craig
Metzger was on hand July 4 to
update the council on the
study of municipal landfill
sites in the area.
Metzger said the county
consultants are currently
meeting on-site with the con-
sultants of each municipality
to gather the information they
need to determine the maxi-
mum potential of each landfill
site in the county.
He said site visits would be
completed by July 11 and
workshops to study. the infor-
mation arc scheduled for
today (July 17) and Aug. 22.
"Everything is still on track
for a decision (regarding
waste management alterna-
tives) by the end of
September," he said.
He added that once that
decision is made, depending
on the outcome of the consul-
tant's findings, the A3 site in
Ashfield will be officially
dropped.
Coun. Mason Bailey of
Blyth restated his objection to
the study and wanted it noted
that the Blyth-Hullett landfill
board is not in favour of the
county take over of landfill
sites.

WORKFARE
TO BE IMPLEMENTED
IN SEPTEMBER
With Huron County recently
being selected as a pilot site
for the province's workfare
program, Social Services
Administrator John
MacKinnon was on -hand to
provide council with an up-
date on the project.
He said the county hopes to
have a workfare 'business
plan' prepared and submitted
to the province for approval
by the end of July.
There will he a puhlic meet-
ing to discuss the plan on July
24, the complete plan will
then he presented at the Aug.
8 meeting of the Social and
Cultural Services committee
and by September, thcy hope
to implement the plan.
MacKinnon assured council
the plan would not put any
private or puhlic sector jobs at
risk and will focus on provid-
ing support to community pro-
jects by non-profit groups.
IT NOW COSTS MORE
TO SPREAD OUT
AT THE FLEA MARKET
The Social and Cultural
Services Committee has
dccidcd to hump the tees for
space at the flea market at the
historic gaol in Godcrich.
in the past, the vendors
were charged by the linear
foot, with a minimum of $8
and a maximum of $40.
Problems emerged, howev-
er. because some vendors
payed thc minimum charge
and then expanded their space
by laying goods out on the
lawn, insisting that they only
needed to pay for the 'table
space' they were using.
To address the problem of
'spreading out,' the committee
dccidcd to charge 15 cents per
square foot.

"To suggest [a hospital clo-
sure] would be unfair. No one
knows the future," he said.
Johnson said the studies
are an exercise in cost-cutting .
and shutting down hospitals
is not the only way to do it.
Fraser Bell, executive
director of the Huron -Perth
DHC, said the arca received a
three per cent reduction in
health care funding and he
expects more cuts in the next
two years.
"We need to make the sys-
tem efficient, effective and
affordable:. We have to
respond to and address these
cuts while maintaing the
health services," he said.
Johns said several district
health councils are doing
similar studies launched by
Minister of Health Jim
Wilson.
