THE HURON EXPOSITOR, July 10, 1996-5
Cobbler Stark is buried in Maitland Bank
CONTINUED from page 4
er, some ten or 12 years ago
and has since been living
retired.
"He was strictly upright and
honest in all his dealings and
possessed in a high degree
the confidence and esteem of
his fellow men. For many
years he filled the position of
village and town assessor and
occupied various other public
and municipal positions.
"He was a well-informed
man, being an extensive read-
er and a conversationalist of
no mean ability, in fact he
dearly loved an argument,
and on many subjects it took
a good man to uphold his
side against him. He was a
genial good-hearted man,
who had many friends and
few enemies.
"His partner in life survives
• him, and he leaves a family
of two sons and four daugh-
ters. In years gone by he was
an exceedingly robust and
active man and for forty
years he never knew what it
was to be a day sick.
"He had reached the good
age of 75 years."
He was buried in Maitland
Bank Cegtery exactly a
century , in December
1896. _x
Just below this obituary in
the local newspaper is a brief
that notes: " Mr. Alf Stark,
who has been ill for some
days, and who was unable to
attend his father's funeral on
Saturday, is, we are pleased
to hear recovering."
This son died relatively
youn shortly thereafter, in
1899 5, and is

NOTES: If anybody out there
knows, anything else about the
Starks so can add to this glimpse
at the disappearing historical
record of Seaforth's settlers we
would welcome a call. A photo-
graph would he a treasured
find.
It should also be noted there is
also a minor muddle of .dates
add spelling in the historical
research and accounts of the
late Mrs. Campbell (who knew
her stuff, and is no relation but
used to live across the road from
s
me in Seaforth) compared to the
original reports as they
appeared in Tho Huron
Expositor 100 years ago under
the eagle editing eyes of
McLeans, strict sticklers for
facts, and not very likely to
screw up the obituary of so
prominent a person.
In any case, this paper's
spelling was Steen (for original
settlers Andrew and wife
Margaret), whereas in her
accounts Mrs. Campbell spelt it
Steen.
In the same vein, In the inter-
ests of historical accuracy, Mrs.
Campbell says Stark had his
home and shoe shop next to
Steen(e)s in Seaforth "in the late
1840s." The account of his pass -

THE FINAL RESTING PLACE - of one of Seaforth's first
Settlers Sam Stark is in nearby Maitland Bank Cemetery
next door in McKillop Township
ing in The Expositor obituary,
however, says the Starks spent
five years in Richmond Hill,
after emigrating in 1848 - which
would date their arrival in this
neck of the woods closer to 1853.
