READY FOR SUMMER - Guitarist Kim Souch of Seaforth helped keep things hopping at
the early years graduation bash at Seaforth Public School Friday.
Leachate volume up for May
The volume of leachate at
the Mid -Huron Landfill Site
in Holmesv.ilte for the month
of May this year is up consid-
erably from last year.
Leachate is liquid created
by rainwater which falls onto
the landfill and soaks into the
waste and enters tiling which
flows into a holding facility
at the Holmesvillc site. The
leachate is regularly pumped
into a tanker truck and taken
to a holding facility in
Goderich.
The recent rainy weather
reflected in a total of -128,743
gallons of leachate pumped
this May compared to 21,907
gallons in May 1995.
Volume of garbage also
affects the amount of
leachate because garbage
absorbs water'in a capillary
action.
This May's leachate num-
hers are the highest since the
rainy spring and summer of
1992. In May 1992, 146,000
g-allons of leachate was
pumped from the landfill site.
SATURDAYS BUSY
As usual. summers are
busier at the Mid -Huron
landfill in Holmesvillc, par-
ticularly Saturday mornings
when the site is open from 8
a.m. to 12 noon.
The site supervisor said
more people are bringing in
pick-up trucks full of garbage
to the landfill instead of buy-
ing stickers for garbage pick-
up in their own municipality.
Chair Cox said the hoard
might be able to afford to
hire more part-time help.
Office manager Munnings
said at the present rate of 120
vehicles on a Saturday morn-
ing, that's an average of one
going through every two
minutes. He said it, doesn't
sound like too much but each
vehicle has to weigh in,
weigh out, a ticket has to he
printed and payment has to
he made. He didn't think hir-
ing an extra person 'would
help because the process
couldn't he speeded up.
The hoard talked ahoti the
pros and cons of extending -
hours on Saturdays but no
motion was made on the mat
ter.

New library desk
Council approved paying
$3,480.15 plus taxes for the
supply and installation of a
circulation desk in th'e recent-'
ly renovated Seaforth library
at its Junc 11 meeting.
Coon. Heather Robinet
recalled the item was deleted
in the budget process, but
Administrator Jim Crocker
reported the old circulation
desk "literally fell apart"
moving up and down.the
.street during renovations.
Paying for the new desk,
along • with previously
approved roof repairs, would
exceed the library's capital
budget by.$1,870, the admin-
istrator said.
The • lowest of two quotes,
which council eventually
accepted Tuesday after it was
forwarded by deputy county
librarian Sharon Cox, came
from Dungannon Custom
Builders but was •$1,025
over the library's estimate
and 1996 budget amount.

Scam artist in
Ontario Provincial Polk
say a "scam artist" was work
ing Huron County las
month, using methods similar
to other fraudulent incidents
that involved a quick-talke
at Port Elgin and Owen
Sound.
A lohe man in a beat -up
half -ton truck flashed his
lights continuously while fol-
lowing an elderly lady south-
bound from Goderich on
Highway 21 around 7:30
p.m. on June 11.
Police say: "finally the lady
pulled over near Bayfield and
the stranger advised her that
she must be having wheel
troubles as her car was sway-
ing back and forth all over
the road. He claimed he was
a service manager and he
would get her a discount on
the repair job.
"He then left to obtain
parts. No money changed
hands. The lady in the inter-
im contacted her husband and
they took the car to a local
repair shop where it was
determined that there was no
problem with the rear of the
car."
OPP describe the suspect as
"very polite and well-
groomed and obviously a

Summer arrived, and the
days started getting shorter,
at the solstice last Thursday,
officially at 10:24 p.m..
Meteorologists say it wasn't
our imagination - this spring
was both wetter and colder
than normal - a full degree
below the 11.6 degrees that is
average for the season.
