The Music Man still echoes in reviewer's noggin
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Editor
"Seventy -Six Trombones
led the big parade..."
1 haven't been able to .get
that song or the many other
fabulous numbers from
Stratford Festival's produc-
tion of Meredith Willson's
The Music Marr, out of my
head since 1 saw the musical
last Wednesday. .
The story is about a con
man, Harold Hill, who tries
to sell a small town musical
instruments and uniforms for
a boys' band, when he
doesn't know how to play a
note of music himself. He
convinces the community Ya
Got Trouble with the new
pool hall in town which is
corrupting the youth. Hill's
answer is a boys' band which
River City, a town of about
3,000, falls for.
This musical doesn't miss a
beat. It's better than good - in
fact it's "gooder" - a word
not often used (or even given
its just recognition as a
word).
The "Train Opening" song
is just amazing. It would put.
some modern "rappers" to
shame as the dozen or so
salesmen taking a train
through Iowa echo the sound
of the locomotive with their
mile -a -minute sales talk.
Strong singing and incredi-
ble daning highlight this
grand show which ran 1,375
perforrnances when it first
opened on . Broadway in
1957.
Great musical and comical
performances are turned in
by Dirk Lumbard as Harold
Hill, his love interest June
Crowley as Marian Paroo,
her younger lisping brother
Winthrop played by an excel-
lent child actor Jonathan
Wexler and last but not least
Mayor Shinn (Eric Donkin)
and his wife Zaneeta (Cara
Hunter), who leave the audi-
ence in stitches - the mayor,
with his frequent mispronun-
ciations and his slightly ine-
briated wife who creates
great spectacles in every
scene she's in.
The whole Marian the
Librarian song and dance
number is incredibly choreo-
graphed and hilarious.
Unlike other musicals I've
seen there's no big lulls or
the feeling of songs being
performed to justify the
genre. The pacing is excellent
and you don't even realize.
you've heard over 25 songs
by the end of The Music
Man.
Of the all the musicals I've
seen (which totals three -

Huron County history depicted on new 52¢ stamp
Huron County history is
recognized in a new 520 spe-
cial issue Canadian postage
stamp.'
It depicts the first hydraulic
grader in The world, a 1936
Champion Maintainer, which
was made by in Goderich and
sold to Clarke Township. The
stamp is part of Canada
Post's new six -machine his-
toric land vehicles issue.
The grader was the first of
its kind to be equipped with a
hydraulic lift for the blade,
which took the place of sys-
tem of gears, shafts and uni-
versal joints in such equip-
ment at the time.
'You could buy this ,grader
for $3,800 in 1936. It came
with a four -speed transmis-
sion and reverse, a first for
road graders, and came with
an enclosed cab at the request
of purchaser.
The stamp was officially

A message from the 1995-
96 Student Council President,
Erin Jamieson: Another year
has come and gone, it was a
great year with many won-
derful memories, a few sur-
prises, hut all in all, a tremen-
dous learning experience. I
would like to thank the staff
and students of SDI -)S for
their continued support and
enthusiasm throughout tilt
year. I would also like to
thank the community of
Seaforth for their support.
especially with the Bears
booster card, chocolate bar
campaign, doll and craft
show. flower .campaign, car
wash and Homecoming. Your
support this year was greatly
appreciated. To our staff
advisors, Ms.' Hazzard, Miss
Britncll, and Ms. Morgan,
thank you for putting up with
us for thc past eight months;
to next year's council, some
words of wisdom: Don't
worry, everything turns out in
the end, so enjoy. Last, but
certainly not least, 1 would
like to thank Marcy, Mandy,
Heather, Judy and Lyndsey
for a fantastic year. I will
always remember the time
we spent together. •
Some highlights from thc
past school year: on April 28
Brent Rihcy, Lisa Rcyonds
and Ahhv Dietz wcnt to
Carlingvitic, Illinois for a
student exchange. "When we
got there we were surprised
to see that it looked much
like Canada, yet after a few
days , we realized there were
many differences. We went to
school and found a large
well -kept carpeted building.
The people were very pleas-
ant and friendly and helped
us fit in. We went to
Abraham Lincoln's tomb and
rubbed the horse's face -
which is meant to bring good
luck. We'd like to thank Mr.
Eccles for arranging this
worthwhile exchange:
On May 27 the Grade 10
advanced geography class
wcnt to the Toronto Zoo to
supplement it's studies of
certain species and environ-
ments.
'Sound bites': What was
thc highlight of your school
year? - Mr. Onn's strange
movies: - working at
Maplewood Manor forco-op;
Keach hour; not hcing
destreamed anymore; hcing
in Mr. Ball's class; English
class; sitting beside Craig in
geography; taping thc teach-
ers to the wall; the silly.
assembly, balloon crunch.
and seeing Mrs. Gerth and
Mr. Parr dressed up as cats;
getting accepted into univer-
sity: the June 4 trip to the
Bruce Nuclear Plant with Mr.
Procter; touring the visitor's
centre, the in -plant tour, .and

the best. And hey, the other
two weren't Mickey Mouse

West Side Story at Grand

good but not "gooder." (Of
course none of them can

the Story of Seaforth play, all
of which I took part in as a

as usual, I digress...)

I was in such a good mood
after the show that it didn't
bother me when I slid on the
well -manicured grassy slopes
of the Festival ' Theatre
grounds in the.rain as I ran to
my car with dozens of other
theatre goers and completely
soaked the right side of my
pants from top to bottom in
water and mud - the second
most embarrassing thing I've
ever done. .
Oh well, that's the power of
music.
