The project, to make money for children's summer camps, announced a "wildly success - /0" beginning with 120 places pre -sold as of June 1, generating $6,000. An estimated $58,00( is required to send 250 kids to camp this summer. Fireworks admission not set The admission price for this summer's annual Canada Day fireworks in Seaforth hasn't been set yet.. The recreation and parks committee feels last year's price of $5 per car is not enough. hut $I0 is too much. Recreation director Marty Bedard told last week's meet- ing of council fireworks donations continue to come in. and if they continue "wc may be able to keep the price the same as last year." He also outlined this sum- mer's planned Seaforth rec programs, noting all arc sub- ject to a minimum enroll- ment. 1 Huron County abandons Ashfield landfill site . BY BLAKE PATTERSON SSP News Staff Despite spending $825,000 on the site, Huron County Council madeit official Thursday abandoning the pro- posed A3 landfill near Ashfield. And in its place, the council approved a request from con- sultants CH2M Gore and Storrie (CG&S) to `fast-track' the completion of the Waste Management Master Plan at a cost of $126,000. Planning and Development 'Committee chair Coun. Pat Down of Usborne Twp. called the decision a major step and said, "This will allow the peo- ple of,Ashtield Twp. to finally get back on with their lives." But not all the councillors agreed with the idea of spend- ing more money on waste management.' Coun. Mason 'Bailey from Blyth said, "I don't see any reason why we should contin- ue to . throw another $126,000 into, along with, the $800,000 we have already done. There must be a way, that wc can discontinue this at a lot less expense ... hopefully none. Why is it not possible that we can just simply drop it and go about our way." Internet project offers free access BY DAVID SCOTT Expositor Editor Huron County residents can , take a free one-hour trip any- where in the world. The vehicle for this no -cost vacation is the Internet cour- tesy of the Huron Community Access Project. Presently there are nine access sites in Clinton, Godcrich, Scaforth, Vanastra and Wingham. ' Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle was on hand Friday at the Huron Business Centre (HBC) in Seaforth to present a certificate from John Manley. Minister of industry and Jon 'Gerrard, Secretary of State for Science, Research arid Development to Don Pulien, chair of•the Huron Business - Development Corporation. Mayor Irwin Johnston represented the Town of Seaforth`. Seaforth is one of 271 com- munities awarded a commu- nity access project by the fed- eral government from more than 750 applicants across the country, said Steckle. Each community access site has a computer terminal con- nected to the Internet. Staff arc available to assist users in logging on and learning the basic tools. Volunteer David House guided dignitaries through a trip on the Internet following the certificate presentation. "You can go through and find hot spots and book -mark them. There's resume writing tips, information on cover let- ters. You can pull'things off from all over," said House. A useful source for entre- preneurs is thc industry Canada web site which fea- tures information on manag- ing a business and other use- ful facts. There's also the National Graduate Register that features all the university grads from across the. coun- try and what they've studied. "it's Canada's resume showcase: Grads can update their profiles," said- House. Companies can access the information and look for potential employees. Community Development Manager Paul Nichol said Industry Canada will also put information on companies at their web site and wants to hopefully get some informa- tion on the Internet about Huron County companies. A sample search for "Canadian Employment" on the Internet had over 53,000 responses or "hits." For political enthusiasts, the proceedings of the House of Commons arc available on the Internet. "We don't even get hard copies any more. if we want to pull off a member's state- ment or speech we go on the computer," said Steckle, Huron -Bruce MP. "We hear so much about the Internet. With community access, people can decide for themselves about the Internet without having their own computer;" said Nichol. The cost of the one-hour • "surfing session" is covered b the HBC and Industry Canada. The centre is open from Monday to. Friday from 9 am to 5 pm but if that doesn't suit your schedule, you can make an appoint- ment to use the access com- - puter at thc Scaforth Library which has evening hours dur- ing the week.
