Huron County
abandons
Ashfield
landfill site
. BY BLAKE PATTERSON
SSP News Staff
Despite spending $825,000
on the site, Huron County
Council madeit official
Thursday abandoning the pro-
posed A3 landfill near
Ashfield.
And in its place, the council
approved a request from con-
sultants CH2M Gore and
Storrie (CG&S) to `fast-track'
the completion of the Waste
Management Master Plan at a
cost of $126,000.
Planning and Development
'Committee chair Coun. Pat
Down of Usborne Twp. called
the decision a major step and
said, "This will allow the peo-
ple of,Ashtield Twp. to finally
get back on with their lives."
But not all the councillors
agreed with the idea of spend-
ing more money on waste
management.'
Coun. Mason 'Bailey from
Blyth said, "I don't see any
reason why we should contin-
ue to . throw another $126,000
into, along with, the $800,000
we have already done. There
must be a way, that wc can
discontinue this at a lot less
expense ... hopefully none.
Why is it not possible that we
can just simply drop it and go
about our way." '
He said the fact that the
Blyth-Hullett landfill is now
being shared with Turnbcrry ,

BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Editor
Huron County residents can
, take a free one-hour trip any-
where in the world.
The vehicle for this no -cost
vacation is the Internet cour-
tesy of the Huron
Community Access Project.
Presently there are nine
access sites in Clinton,
Godcrich, Scaforth, Vanastra
and Wingham. '
Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle was on hand Friday
at the Huron Business Centre
(HBC) in Seaforth to present
a certificate from John
Manley. Minister of industry
and Jon 'Gerrard, Secretary of
State for Science, Research
arid Development to Don
Pulien, chair of•the Huron
Business - Development
Corporation. Mayor Irwin
Johnston represented the
Town of Seaforth`.
Seaforth is one of 271 com-
munities awarded a commu-
nity access project by the fed-
eral government from more
than 750 applicants across
the country, said Steckle.
Each community access site
has a computer terminal con-
nected to the Internet. Staff
arc available to assist users in
logging on and learning the
basic tools.
Volunteer David House
guided dignitaries through a
trip on the Internet following
the certificate presentation.
"You can go through and
find hot spots and book -mark
them. There's resume writing
tips, information on cover let-
ters. You can pull'things off
from all over," said House.

arc hooked up for Internet
use.'
A useful source for entre-
preneurs is thc industry
Canada web site which fea-
tures information on manag-
ing a business and other use-
ful facts. There's also the
National Graduate Register
that features all the university
grads from across the. coun-
try and what they've studied.
"it's Canada's resume
showcase: Grads can update
their profiles," said- House.
Companies can access the
information and look for
potential employees.
Community Development
Manager Paul Nichol said
Industry Canada will also put
information on companies at
their web site and wants to
hopefully get some informa-
tion on the Internet about
Huron County companies.
A sample search for
"Canadian Employment" on
the Internet had over 53,000
responses or "hits."
For political enthusiasts, the
proceedings of the House of
Commons arc available on
the Internet.
"We don't even get hard
copies any more. if we want
to pull off a member's state-
ment or speech we go on the
computer," said Steckle,
Huron -Bruce MP.
"We hear so much about the
Internet. With community
access, people can decide for
themselves about the Internet
without having their own
computer;" said Nichol.
The cost of the one-hour •
"surfing session" is covered
b the HBC and Industry
Canada. The centre is open
from Monday to. Friday from
9 am to 5 pm but if that
doesn't suit your schedule,
you can make an appoint-
ment to use the access com- -
puter at thc Scaforth Library
which has evening hours dur-
ing the week.
