From the Ryerson Rambler
H.H. Kerr - the man behind Ryerson dream
Editor's Note: The follow-
ing article on Seaforth and
McKillop native Howard
Kerr appears in the
Spring/Summer 1996 edition
of the Ryerson Rambler, the
alumni magazine for Ryerson
Polytechnic University.
BY iIVANA BENN
/n 1998, Ryerson will reach
the half century mark in its
history as an institution offer-
ing first-class education. In
preparation for this event,
Rambler will be running a
series of historical articles
outlining Ryerson's evolution
from an institute of technolo-
gy to Canada's first polytech-
nic unive' 5ity.
The J , ,r in this series is
dedicated to H.H. Kerr, the
man who founded Ryerson
and saw it through its grow-
ing pains in young adult-
hood. And who, many say,
never really retired but was
on hand to make sure
Ryerson became a successful
adult on a par with Ontario:r.
. other institutions of higher
learning.
Howard Hillen Kerr,
'Ryerson's founder and princi-
pal for 18 years, had a dream.
"He wanted to establish a
post -secondary technical
institution that would meet
the needs of the business
community and local indus-
try.
He formulated the idea after
a visit to the renowned
Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MiT). It proved
to be a fateful trip, one that.
would Icad Kcrr into the his-
tory books as. a pioneer of
technical education in
Ontario.
Kerr's- timing for such an
endeavor was perfect. The
war was over and industries
and businesses :needed a
highly skilled -workforce. He
persuaded the provincial gov-
ernment that it was possible
to establish a Canadian ver-
sion of the famed MIT. In
1948 the Ryerson Institute of
Technology opened its doors
on the site of. the stately
Normal School - the cradle of
education where, 100 years
earlier, Egerton Ryerson
brought public education to
Ontario. Kerr adapted the for-
mer teacher training facility
to bring technical education
to the province.
Kerr acknowledged that the
dream of a first-rate techno-
logical institute in Canada
would take a longtime, per-
haps even "a hundred years,"
and he dedicated himself to
the task. At one time he told
a group of reporters: "My
whole life is Ryerson. I live
it, cat it, sleep it."
It was he who shaped the
Institute. He chose the name,
the programs, and the faculty.
Although Rycrsen was
to be a practical
institute, Kerr
' insisted . it also
include liberal
studies.
"Too narrow
an education is
a mistake. A
student never
knows what
he' I I be
called upon
to do in the
future. If his
scope is too
narrow, he
may find it
very difficult.
to change."
H.H. Kerr
was born in
Seaforth,
Ontario on
Christmas Eve
at the turn
of the
century. He attended the
University of Toronto and
received a BASc in
Mechanical Engineering and
a Bachelor of Pedagogy. He
taught high school until 1940,
when he was appointed
director for Ontario of the
Dominion -Provincial War
Emergency Training
Program. In 1945, he directed,
the Rehabilitation Training
Program for discharged war
veterans. And in 1948,.he
began his long principalship
at Ryerson from which he
retired in 1966.
He was regarded as a
strong-willed, authoritarian
leader who set high
standards for
faculty,
staff,
H.H. Kerr of
McKillop and
Seaforth.

students. He was known to
expel students who shamed
the Ryerson name and he
thought nothing of
suspending extra -curricular
activities campus -wide if
students did not uphold his
code of behaviour.
Kerr ran Ryerson like it was
his family, and like most
fathers he also had a soft side.
Hospitalized instructors could
be sure of a visit from Kerr.
He was known to write
fatherly letters of condolence
to students who lost a parent
and to befriend lonely
students who needed
counselling. -
Kerr was determined to
have Ryerson take its place as
a distinctive institution of
higher learning that -would be
known through the country.
