Loss of female turtles has effect on species

ar; time. •
Road development is a fac-
tor. Highway traffic increases
the turtle death rate, particu-
larly for the all-important
nesting females, who Tike.

.TOO "CUTE" TO LIVE
"Woollies" arc also kind of
cute up close, some call them
"charismatic" even, -but ccr--
tainly "friendly" to a fault.
Only one of the five we
found last week was shy or
even flinched, by turning tur-
tle and sticking its head hack
in its shell, -while being held
by thc .biologist while a pho-
to.grapher with a massive
close-up lens and extremely
noisy old motor -drive took -
pictures an inch from its
CyCs.
Collectors seem charmed
When. the population is so
by thc wood turtle's lively small rn start with...? -
personality, its curiosity and
climbing ability, along with
its colourful hx1k.
"You'vc.got to he kidding -
a turtle that comes when you
call it'? How cute."
Such collecting, although
illegal, is almost impossible
to enforce because the rules
can he easily got around by
someone who knows what
they are doing. These people
have tipped the 'wood turtles'
odds of survival to now "vul=
ncrahlc," and, perhaps soon
extinction.
The loss of hatchlings, male
or female, is mathernatically
of little consecj fence, since
their odds for survival arc so
slim to start with, but the loss
pf every adult' female has a
profound effect on the whole
-wood turtle population, and
ultimately the species. '
1- : "F,very
Its a
re,. I ding
population .u.1t -1, not be
regained for many decades."
Malhiot says Ontario's nat-
ural resources ministry is
downsizing on its own these
days, and it is a fact of life
that reptiles aren't "high pro-
file" beyond.a few natural--
ists' concerns.
More resources and ener-
gies arc expended across the
province, and indeed the con-
tinent, on species that have
more people interested in
them, and hence more money
is somehow found to ensure -
that their populations thrive,
for instancc'ducks and trout.
It seems the friendly
"woody" could do with a lit-
tle more instinftive fear in
these trying times.
