Former area MPP Murray
Elston has announced he
won't take a run at the lead-
ership of the Liberal party
later this year.
A former health minister
and chairman of the manage-
ment board of cabinet,
Elston, 46, retired as MPP for
Bruce in 1994 after 13 years
in provincial politics. He was
nosed out by Lyn McLeou at
the Ontario Liberal's last
leadership convention.
"I'm content 1 had a chance
to consider the leadership,"
Elston said when he
announced he won't run. "I
am intrigued by politics. It
does get into a person's
blood. I enjoyed it, but at the
end of the day, I'd sooner" go
with my private life."

or asleep or impersonating
the Energizer Bunny at the
time of the crime?
That's easy - the 0.3. jury's
on tour in Canada. Hcy, I'm
kidding. The O.J. jury won't
tour until all their contractual
obligations to publishers and
network television news
magazines are lucratively ful-
filled.
So how could this happen,
you ask? Well, the judicial
system in Canada is complete
and somewhat quirky. Money
helps and loopholes loom
large, butessentially you
need four ingredients to bake
a cake -walk, successful
defence.
You need a lawyer that's
sharp as a tack, a jury that's
dumb as a stump and a judge
whose directions are so had
he never pays for a Domino's
pizza, because they can't find
his house in Tess than thirty
minutes.
. Throw in an expert witness,
usually a psychiatrist or -psy-
chologist who doesn't mind
being a prostitute for a day,
as long as the client -pays
cash and bingo! - you're free
and clear the Canadian way.
Just be sure to show
remorse. Sobbing sells.

Steckle votes
against bill
Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle was one of 29
Liberals who voted against
his ruling party on final read-
ing of legislation prohibiting
discrimination against homo-
sexuals at Ottawa May 9.
The vote passed 153 to 76,
after advancing 178 to 53
after second reading of the
amendment the week before.
Steckle voted "no" both
times.
The new legislation is
designed to protect homosex-
uals from discrimination in
federally regulated work
places and businesses.
Pay for policing
"The need for all munici-
palities to pay for their polic-
ing costs," is a theme thc
Ontario Association of Police
Service Boards plans to press
with Solicitor General in a
June summit.
More than 2(X) delegates at
the 34th annual meeting of
thc province's police hoards
in Toronto May 3 to 5 also
adopted resolutions to: allow
for their employment and
training of part-time police
officers in smaller municipal-
ities; require car manufactur-
ers to install anti -theft
devices in new vehicles; and
urge the federal justice minis-
ter to revise the young
offenders act so that their
names can be released, on the
second arrest after a first con-
viction, to the public.

wasn't pushing for either of
the changes. But he had in
the past complained thatthe
time .it took to unload the
leachate had increased since
.a filter was put in the line to
the holding tank.
One board member said
that in the event of -an envi-
ronmental spill, the money
the board spent on these
changes would well offset the
cost of a possible lawsuit.
"This board asked
Conestoga -Rovers for direc-
tion on these problems. They
told us this was illegal (the
way the truck was unloading
leachate). We have to unload
over a spill pad," said hoard .
member Ken - Hunter,
Commissioner of Works for

He said the building Owners
would say "forget it" if they
hadto pay $2;000 for a P
trap. He said the Knights of

derful" considering the situa-
tion.
