Cowboys and aboriginals in public school play
BY TREVOR ZAPLE &
JASON MacDONALD
Out West - thc Calgary
Stampede, thc endless plains,
Cowboys. Indians, frontier
towns and gold mines. The
west is also the setting for
our school play, 'Going
West.'
11 is the story of a young
man, the 'Dude' Mr.
Ncwhcrry, a former school
teacher from Boston who is
going west to 'grow up with
the country.' Hitching a ride
with a wagon train, the Dude
• becomes a hero, by capturing
the notorious bandit, Bart
Slade, and gains the affec-
tions of a former student,
Miss Sally.
Other events occur, includ-
ing an encounter with the
Sanwaki •Indian nation, and
thc Travelling Theatre of
• Performing Arts, run by con'
artist John Lioncll Langtrcc.

And let's not forget the
backstage people, working on
sets, props, lights, make-up,
hack -drop, and advertising, a
production's backbone.
There arc so many that I
cannot list all their names
here. Then we have thc dime -
tors, Mrs. Holmes and Mrs.
Hoelscher, the Music
Director, Mrs. Griffin and the
Dance Choreographer, Mrs.
van den Akker. For four
whole weeks this cast prac-
tised, everyday.
On .Tuesday, May 7, the
dress rehearsal was held here
at school, and on May 8 the
matinee and night perfor-
mances were held. The mati-
nee was held to a fairly' full
house, but the night play was
held to a packed audience.
The crowd enjoyed the
humour, so much in fact that
the cast on stage had to stall Jillian Houston starred as
for a moment to keep from Diamond Lil in the SPS pro -
laughing. . duction of "Going West."
Arena agrees to trial hall rental for youth group
The Seaforth Youth Group
has found part-time premises
to play pool and cards. in the
small community hall at the
arena, above the ice surface.
The rental was approved for
$200 per month, on a three-
month trial basis by the man-
agement committee of the
Seaforth and District
Community Centres at last
month's meeting.
The youths have agreed no
alcohol will he allowed. they
will clean up after themselves
and provide a list of approved
chaperones. and also arrange
a schedule with the arena
manager when others arca ,t
using the hall.
Community Centres man-
ager Graham Nesbitt says the
group is maybe looking at
cmc -and -a -half to two hours
on Monday and Wednesday
nights, some time on
Tuesdays, and whenever else
it can he arranged, probably
between 15 and 25 hours per
month.
Details aren't fixed, but
Nesbitt figures things will be
operational before the hoard
next meets June 20.
A delegation of Dean Price,
Curtis Costello, Bob
Costello, Linda Brown and
Anita Peckitt asked the board
for a place where the 30 to 40
members of the group could
drop in, with no alcohol per-
mitted and supervision of a
code of conduct by adults.
The youth group surfaced
about a year -and -a -half ago
when concerns were raised
about teenagers hanging
around Main Street. It has
been looking for some kind
of home and raising funds
since.

Will the real Elvis..,
• When Elvis Presley died
in 1977 there were 48 profes-
sional Elvis impersonators.
Today there are 7,328,
according to the trade maga-
zine Editor & Publisher,
which notes that if that
growth is projected, by the
year 2012 one person in four
on the face of the earth will
be an Elvis impersonator.
