Boyd wins
Canada's scholastic. player
of the year in major junior
hockey is Seaforth's Boyd
Devereaux of the Kitchener
Rangers.
He got the award at the
Canadian Hockey League's
awards ceremony in the
midst of the Memorial Cup at
Peterborough on Monday
night. The CHL is made up
of the best junior leagues in
the country - in Ontario, out
West and in Quebec. The 18 -
year -old Devereaux recently
national award at Memorial Cup
won the Bobby Smith trophy
for being the Ontario Hockey
League's scholastic player of
the year, -and was the OHL's
nominee for the national
award just announced.
Boyd came out of the.
Seaforth minor and junior
hockey systems. He has
exceptional hockey skills and
is expected to go high in this
summer's National Hockey
League draft.
He maintained an 84 aver-
age in school with an aggres-
sive workload while playing
66 -game OHL schedule this
season, not including play-
offs.
"I have to really credit the
Rangers' organization (fop
the emphasis placed on edu-
cation)," Boyd told Jim
Cressman of the London Free
Press after receiving this
week's award. "Probably
from the past, this has been
turned around 100 per cent to
where the knocks against the
OHL aren't valid anymore.
"It feels good to be recog-
nized for something like this
and it's a good award because
it shows hockey players
aren't just stupid jocks. We
do have some brains out there
and l think we're represent-
ing the majority of hockey
players:'
Boyd was a rookie with the
Rangers last year, after help-
ing Stratford's junior B
Cullitons to an Ontario .
Hockey Association champi-
onship the year before.
