New sewage system expensive
A new communal sewage
system for Bayfield would
cost a "ballpark figure" of
$15 -million, according to
Steve Burns from the engi-
neering firm B.M. Ross, who
spoke at a public meeting on
sewage altematives in the vil-
lage April 27.
Burns told the approximate-
ly 150 people attending that
Bayfield is the fastest grow-
ing community in Huron
County. From a 1993 survey,
the engineering company has
determined that about one in
14 properties in Bayfield has
a sewage holding tank, which
is a high percentage, and
about half the septic systems
in the village are reaching the
end of their. "lives", and are
at (east 20 -years -old.
The community continues
to work on the problem.

Kindergarten was introduced
in Ontario in 1882. Legislation
passed in 1885 made it part of
the elementary school system.
However, it wasn't until after
World War 11 that enrollment
starteAl to increase rapidly, from
2,000 in 1950 to more than
40,000 in 1970. Kindergarten
enrollment in 1994-95 was
almost 140,000 students.
Junior kindergarten programs
began around 1950, with fewer
than 1,000 youngsters enrolled,
mainly in cities such as Toron-
to and Ottawa. In 1994-95, the
most recent year for which
information is available, junior
kindergarten enrolment in
Ontario exceeded 100,000.
