ly and friends to Mike
MacRae for his success at the
Stratford Kiwanis Music
Festival. Mike received three
first -place finishes and one
second. He also won the
Reginald Geen Trophy at the
senior vocal trophy night,
held at St. Paul's United
Church, Stratford.
Mike, we are all very proud
of you and enjoy you sharing
your talent with us all! Keep
up the good work!

BEAR FACTS
The Girls' Soccer Team has
had a slow startto its season
hut- continues to improve
each game. The girls lost a
close battle to Central Huron,
1:-0- in the pouring rain; and
lost -4-0 to Godcrich in the
snow. They played a good
game against South Huron,
again in the rain, but came
out on the losing end of a 4-0
score. They are hoping for
better weather to spur them
on to their first -win.
The first boys' soccer game
was a loss to Godcrich on
April 22. The boys came
hack with a 2-1 victory
against Wingham. Goals
were scored by Brent Hulley
and teff Irwin with assists by
Kevin Meidinger and Jerry
Mason. Josh Dcitz did an
excellent job in goal. Good
luck next time.

player for the 1996 NHL
entry draft in June."
The Ontario Hockey
League's sentiments are
expressed even stronger by
Boyd's school.
1n his letter of reference to
the OHL, Vince Denomme,
guidance councillor at St.
Mary's states:
"Academically speaking,
Boyd has hecn an A+ student
from Grade 9 to today. It is
remarkable that a student
cannot only take a full acade-
mic schedule including three
OAC's, hut also to accom-
plish this as a Grade 12 stu-
dent while maintaining the
commitment needed to he a
first-round NHL pick.
"This statement summa-
rizes Boyd's maturity and
locus 'he has the ability to set
high standards for himself
and the commitment and
skills needed to accomplish
these high goals:..
"As a person, I admire the
confident but humble -spoken
Boyd who prefers to talk
about how well his team-
mates or line mates are per-
forming rather than his own
accomplishments. I have
never heard a negative com-
ment about a teammate,
coach or opponent from him.
His positive outlook and opti-
mism to life must rub off on
his teammates oven is he is
only a rookie...
"He is .a student that stu-
dents and staff alike can hold
as a model for attitude, per-
sonality development and
goal -setting," the letter from
St. Mary's in Kitchener con-
cludes.
Softball slowing down?

registered for minor soccer in
Scaforth this season, com-
pared to 95 players last year.
Bedard says he figures fam-
ilies are "narrowing things
down" these days for finan-
cial reasons and otherwise
when it comes to playing
sports in the busy summer
season, when so much else is
always happening, for
instance holidays.
Articles in weekly papers in
both Wingham. and Exeter in
the last three eeks have also
indicated minor softball is
growing out of favour with
the young. The president of
Exeter minor hall says he's
concerned about the future of
minor ball. Registration there
is the lowest Doug Pearson
has seen in 15 years.
Rec director Bedard says
there arc 12 travel teams this
year for minor softball in
Scaforth, down two tcams
from last year. Last year there
were six house league teams
in town, four junior and two
senior, but this year house
league is still a question
mark. He says organizers
may have to stretch things to
set up just two teams in both
junior and senior, for a total
of four.
