Goaltender Wood goes home with three Cents' awards
Rookie goalie Scott Wood
won three trophies for stop-
ping puck's so well this sea-
son, as the Scaforth
Centenaires closed the hook
on their 1995-96 campaign
with an annual awards pre-
sentation and pot -luck late
Sunday afternoon:
"Woody" was narncd.thc
junior hockey team's most
valuable playoff performer
and rookie of the year. Ile
also shared another award as
regular -season MVP, with
second -year forward Steve
Mclnally who won a second
trophy outright for hcing
team scoring leader.
Brent Hulley won the tro-
phy for tieing the Centenaires
top dcfcnceman. Dwight
Gingcrich got the nod for
hcing most improved, and
J.C. Kirk -won the Jack
McLlwain Trophy for hcing
the player who hest com-
bined sportsmanship with
ability this season.
All were rookies.
Veterans. Kalen Carroll .and
Jason Uunscith were also
given plaques, as graduating
ovcragcrs.
Mcinally not only led the
Cents, but took the Morelli
Division scoring title by tour
points with his total of 58,
from 25 goals and 33 assists.
• Wood played on a minor
card all season for the Cents,
as the junior and minor sys-
tems in Seaforth co-operated,
and only veteran Darren
Kints of the Exeter Hawks
posted hotter numbers in the
division of the Ontario
.1 -hickey Association's Junior
"D"evelopment League.
Wood represented the Cents
between the pipes at the
annual all-star girmc and fin-
ished the regular season ,with
3.34 goals against average! ip
a little more than 23 games.
He got blown out a couple
i of times in the playoffs, hut
proved his mental toughness

The diminutive Gingcrich
got hatted around like a pin-
ball all scat;on but. just kept
coming at opponents, like a
bbd headache, hardly missing

in all 36 games the Cents
played during their regular
schedule. finishing with eight
goals and- 10 assists: Hc and
'inmates Jeff Volland and
Kirk caught fire and were a
hig reason the Cents sur-
prised Lucan in five (three
times on Irish ice), with rela-
live ease, in the first round of
this winter's playoffs. Kirk,
the most valuable player on
the Goderich midgets the sea-
son before, scored eight goals
and added another ei-ght
assists in his first season with'
the Scaforth juniors.
Manager Gregor Campbell
thanked players, executive,
the three-man rookie coach-
ing staff, trainer and equip-
ment manager for all working
at it and acting like a team
that wanted to win, revitaliz-
ing the Scaforth Centenaires

Hockey Club with energy,
fresh blood and new.idc'as ir+
its 23rd season.
He said it made a Netter
team and makes the game
more fun for everyone,
including fans hungry for a
winner.
The manager also cautioned
each season of junior hockey
is a clean slate, and teams
and players that think fast
season's Success automatical-
ly means anything at all the
next, often get lazy so lose
their competitive edge.

they would all be hack and
also thanked parents and his
wife for hcing so.supportive.

he never played on a champi-
on, hut he gave it his hest
shot. Captain Dunseith
thanked this year's coaching
staff for tieing so up -front
with players, -a hig change
from some other seasons. The
two ovcragcrs played in total
seven seasons- for the
Centenaires.
The hockey club's annual
meeting is .next Wednesday
night.
