Girls' hockey growing by leaps and bounds for WOAA
The Western Ontario
Athletic Association (WOAA)
girls hockey program is enter-
ing its fourth year..
There have been girls' hock-
ey teams in this -area for many
years but lacking organization
or a system 10 produce new
players. Some of these
approached WOAA for orga-
nization, direction and a con-
stitution to play hockey.
The league began with six
learns in a senior division for
girls 16 years and older. Thal
an intermediate division for
players aged 12-15 hegan. Last
season a junior division, for
players 11 and under, was on
the ice.
There were 454 players.
coaches and trainers registered
on 22 teams.
The governing body_ for
girls' hockey in this province
is the Ontario Women's
Hockey Association (OWHA).
Last -fall the membership voted
that WOAA join the OWHA
so that the benefits of the larg-
er organization could he
enjoyed by the smaller.
The •Western Ontario associ-
ation still governs its own pro-
gram in this area.
This Flexibility is helping the
new hockey teams get started
so that girls of almost any age
can participate, according to a
WOAA press release.
The introduction of the
junior division may give this
arca the strong foundation
required for a solid hockey
program in the future.
