A "Lik" is roughly 1/100th
of a "Loon" in value in
"LETS", a local economic
trading system in its infancy
'near Godcrich, that calls
itself MTC, which is short
for Mcnesctung Trading
Community.
It's all based on barter, trad-
ing goods and services for
same: Similar groups -are
springing elsewhere I -in
Canada, the U.S., Australia
and in particular Ncw
Zealand, which has 'been hav-
ing a rough go of it lately
economically speaking.
"We're not a .get -rich -
•quick -scheme," r says. Allan
Dettweiler, a founding mem-
ber of the Menesetung barter,
ers who now. number about
35 members .rom central and
-north Huro:: and southern
Bruce counties. -You won't
get rich and you won't go
into debt, but you might end
up with goods or services
that you otherwise. might not
have been able to afford.
You 'can 'learn French, get
good qualityhay,' buy arcon-
ian blue chicken -eggs, rent a
plow, get a sign painted, haver
a retreat in a rustic cabin, buy
A iVietnamcse pot-bellied pig,
take 'welding lessons - the list
goes on and bn.
VALUE FOR VALUE
Each member determines
how much they want to
charge for their products or
services and whether they
want to deal in "real money"
or MTC currency or "Tungs"
(from Menestung) and "Liks"
or combinations thereof. A
"Tung", roughly equals the
federal dollar, or ."Loon": A
"Lik" is like a penny.
"Money initially -wasn't
intended to make money,"
says Dettweiler. "It was
intended onlyto represent the
"value of something."
-The Menesetung trading
community has a bookkeeper
who tracks all transactions to
keep an up-to-date record of
...who has credit and who has
debt.. "Tungs" and "Liks" can
be accumulated.
There are modest member-
ship fees, payable in real
"Loons" and a newsletter, but
the MTC leaves collecting
taxes on goods and services
up to individual members.
Three or four times a year.
- the traders have a "market
day" where members get
together to hawk services or
show samples of their goods. -
"It's a social day as well as
a gigantic barter -fest,"
Dettweiler says. "Everybody
has some useful skill. You
might just not recognize it for
what it is."
