Yardley suggested the land- fill might he able to lower costs if monitoring was reduced. He says it's normal for the government to case up on frequency of monitoring if a landfill has been opera- tional for five years or more with safe results. "We've been operating now for five years, we have good data from the landfill. We haven't seen any issues. It's time to back off on monitor- ing," said Yardley. "Most landfills cut back to twice .a year (monitoring) when they have •a data base of five years." Hc also said an additional cost savings might be real- ized if the number of test wells drilled on the site is reduced. However, it's ultimately up to the government to decide if monitoring can be reduced. Yardley will include that rec- ommendation in the MHLS' annual report to the, Ministry of Environment and Energy (MOEE) which is due by the end of the month. THE HURON EXPOSITOR, Apell 24, 1ti/F13 'We don't just teach gospel values. We live them' Brown doesn't want to 'sell soul' CONTINUED from page 1 Dr. Brown said the sepa- rate board is willing and committed to entering shar- ing agreements with its part- ners but "we don't want to sell our souls to do it. We are a perfectly viable board the way we are." Trustee Ron Marcy said the Huron board is fooling taxpayers by suggesting edu- cation costs would decrease. The Huron board spends $850 a year per pupil more than the separate board. If any costs change, it would he to the Catholic ratepayers and they would go up, he said. In a press release dated April 17, the Huron hoard claims there are ways to pre- serve the independence of language and religious rights for Roman Catholic and other denominational groups in one board. Separate trustees disagreed. "We teach children about Jesus Christ. We don't just teach gospel values. W'2 live them," said Miller. Dr. Brown said the Huron hoard seems to believe the only place the separate hoard has values is in the schools. He argued that occurs in all the board's buildings, includ- ing the administration build- ing in Dublin. So, a public education administration can- not operate the. Catholic schools without compromis- ing the separate hoard's val- ues and the rights of Catholics. Dr. Brown said the sepa- rate hoard learned of the Huron hoard's campaign at the end of the last tri -board committee meeting on March 28 atter spending three hours discussing ways the hoards could work together in pur- chasing and transportation. Report says Huron should take control of garbage in county CONTINUED from page 1 is down which extends the site life. Everything in favour of (waste) reduction is hap- pening," reported Yardley. "The (alternative studies) report agreed the county had to take control of the flow of garbage in the county," said Cox. He asked the hoard how this recent news from the county would affect the Holmesville site. "As long as the landfill is under the control of this board it would not be consid- ered a county site," said Hunter. "We're under no obligation to do this. It was only a rec- ommendation,"said Cox. Originally, when the county set out about 10 years ago on a search for a landfill, it wanted to find a site with a life of 40 years. This goal has now been seen as unrealistic. He said at present Wingham is out a space at _its landfill. Stephen Township has an emergency extension and Turnberry possibly has no site. Hunter said an amendment was made to the Mid -Huron landfill's operating policy that allows for additional municipalities to join. "The last amendment was 'only waste sites emanating within geographical boundaries of the MHLS board' (would be accepted)." SENIOR BOYS' ROLLER HOCKEY TEAMS BLUES 1. Craig Somerville 2. Although, he stated that if another municipality was to join, it would likely come in at a different.buy-in rate since the member municipali- ties had been paying capital expenses for five years. Regarding the proposed A3 county landfill site in Ashfield Township, Cox said to proceed with an environ- mental assessment would he very costly. But to open the Ashfield site would he as expensive as any other option the county has, according to the report by engineering firms R. Cave and Associates and Gore and Storric Limited. The MHLS hoard. chair doesn't know how Huron County Council will react to the report tomorrow. "County was philosophically objec- tionable to exporting its garbage. But one recommen- dation in the report is to export. Phillips Environmental of Petrolia is recommended as the most economically viable." The report to county says the last option for waste man agement is incineration fo reasons of costliness and pol lution.
