Board foots bill for fumes
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Editor
Thc Mid -Huron Landfill
Site (MHLS) hoard has
agreed to foot, the hill for a
sewer trap which should pre-
vent any future .leachate
fumes from entering the
Knights of Columbus build-
ing in,Goderich.
Concerns were raised at last
month's landfill meeting
when a report- given by Ken
Hunter revealed that toxic
-fumes were detected from -
manholes in the Parsons
Court area near the landfill's
leachate transfer facility -and
in the Knights of Columbus
hall.
The MHLS board was prc-:
sented with an 'investigative
report on the leachate odour
,from Jim Yardley of
Conestoga -Rovers &
Associates at its April 18
meeting.
"Based .on data. CRA con-
cludes that. the high odour
level was caused by high
strength/slightly acidic
leachate from the landfill site
as opposed to a condition
within the facility or sanitary
sewer system," stated the
engineering report.
"The leachate was slightly
richer. It had a higher organic
strength than most leachate
the last two to three years."
said Yardley. "But it is not as
high as we've seen on the
site.
The engineering firm had a "building" trap (orP-trap) on
few theories about why the thc sewer lin a to a building.
leachate might he stronger - "This would ensure there was
but concluded that. "as the
exact cause of the high
strength/acidic leachate could
not be determined, the possi-
bility exists for this condition
to occur againin the future."
always water in the line and
would not allow odour to
enter the building," said
Yardley. Thc cost for each
trap would he approximately.
$2.500.
Diagrams of the traps were
The firm recommended test- , included with -the report. The
ing thc pH level of each traps are inside a manhole
structure and include a
'cleanout and vent. "You can
easily access them if there's
blockage in the future.
One board member asked
Yardley if sewer gas was
explosive.
"You have to worry about
the methane content of the
gas. It displaces oxygen:
Leachate is higher strength
than regular sewage.
Methane becomes explosive
leachate load. If the pH is
found to be less than 6.5
(acidic), a neutralising agent
(base) shouldhe added' to the
• leachate either in the tanker
prior to transportation to the
facility•or added at the facili-
ty, stated the report to the
landfill board.
-"All buildings connected. -to
a municipal sanitary sewer
must have traps installed as
required by the plumbing
code to act as an air seal on
thc sewer and prevent the
migration of sewer gas from
entering the building."
Yardley noted: that as long
as these traps arc kept full of
water sewer gases should be
prevented from entering the
building but it's "not uncom-
mon for those to be dry."
He said with thc main flow
of sewage in the Parsons
Court area from leachate at
the facility. if a trap was left
dry. the odour would move
into buildings. especially if
they were unused.
Aside from adding a -neu-
tralizing agent, Conestoga -
Rovers recommended
installing an additional

Leachate Unloading.
Recommendations were
also given by CRA to speed
up the leachate unloading
procedure at the facility from
hauler Ross Pannabecker's
tanker. -
"The unloading time for the
current tanker could effec-
tively be cut in -half by
installing a second unloading
pipe connection at the facili-
ty. The hauler could then
connect the second tank com-
partment to. the second
unloading -pipe connection
and unload both tanker coni-
parttnents at the same time,"
recommended the report.
A second recommendation
for spill containment was to.
extend the driveway approxi-
mately 15 feet "to allow the
tank truck to back up further
so that the side connections
are located over -the existing
spill pad."
The MHLS board passed a
motion to go ahead with the
recommended revisions at a
cost of $6.000.
