To report scrapie was devastating
CONTINUED on page 6
season and stress from deal-
• ing with Ottawa, 1 gave in,
which i have always regret-
• ted; not that i planned to sell
the meat but because of what
1 considered cruelty to the
flock.
My experience has con-
vinced me that for a shepherd
to report scrapie, it would be
as devastating as entering a
mine -field except that instead
of lead shots it would result
in attacks by politicians,
Animal ' Health officials,
financial blows ( in my case
also. a tax audit), being
ignored by other shepherds
when i wanted to let them
know what Whelan had done
to me. legal blows. etc. There
were times when I hated
myself for what i had done to
.myself, to family life and
even the dog. i knew in my
-.heart that my sacrifice was
necessary. In the years since,
I have been encouraged to
keep the situation before the
public. Well-recognized neu-
tologists and other profes-
sionals hacked me when the
Mad Cow Disease was taking
its toll in Great Britain. •
My diary of April 16, 1989
reads: "C'TV carried report of
increase in scrapie among
English cattle. Australia bans
but Canada secs.no need to
ban. •Agriculture Canada
staffer looked brain-dead
when being interviewed."
In June 1990, the magazine
"Cattlemen", published by
Public Press Publishing, a
division of United Grain
Growers Limited of
Winnipeg and Oakland. Ca.,
commented on the BSE situa-
tion in Great Britain. An
extract read as follows:
"There is no evidence of the
disease outside of Great
Britain or Ireland.
importation of live cattle into
Canada from either of these
countries was discontinued in
early February. The importa-
tion of offals has also been
discontinued." Were
Canadian farmers feeding the
very' offal which has wrought
such havoc to farmers, man-
ufacturers,- etc.. and to con-
sumers'? Mary Dean,
Cattlemen's Director of
Public Affairs closed her arti-
cle: "Succinctly. BSE is not
an issuefor the.Canadian
public or producers to he
concerned about. There may,
however, he increased media
coverage if large numbers of
infected cattle in Great
Britain are slaughtered."
In J986. Dr. -Z. Davanipour,
PhD; veterinarian and epi-
demiologist, Temple
University. Philadelphia, was
expressing grave.concern
about scrapie in USA sheep.
Bridal shower held at St.
A bridal shower was held
on Sunday afternoon, April
14. for Sherri Maloney.
daughter of [icon and Mary
Maloney. in the St.
Columban Church hall.
Friends. neighbours and rela-
tives attended. Sherri thanked
everyone for 'coming and for
all the many useful gifts. A
delicious lunch was served
' by Joanne Flanagan and
Anne Marie Maloney assisted
by their sisters.
"Were farmers
feeding offal,
which has
wrought such
havoc, to
consumers?"
Yet in the 1990s 1 recall an
Agriculture Canada employ-
ee determined to bring a wild
aaim.tl to Alberta from areas
in the USA where scrapie
was found on ranches. 1 have
heard her plans were foiled.
She argued, "absolutely no
danger of bringing scrapie
into Canada."
1 would like to thank Mrs.
Brenda McIntosh who gave
me great support through the
ordeal as we tried to make
sense of what was happening
to me and the animals. She
was with me to the last day in
court.
• When 1 am asked today if i
eat Iamb, 1 honestly reply
"only from New Zealand."
Animal Health officials
promised they would report
to me where my animals got
the disease. To date I have
not been advised. Somewhere
in Huron County there has to
be a flock which brought dis-
aster to me. All of the ani-
mals Nought from me.and
their offspring were supposed
to have been destroyed. I was
to discover in 1983 that some
of these animals were sold at
a K -W stockyard, most
Nought by dealers, some back
to Huron.
During an April 1996 CBC
Radio interview, J. Ellis of
the University of
Saskatchewan, Saskatoon,
warned Canadians that he
believes Canada is falling
into the same situation as
Great Britain in 1981. Mrs.
Thatcher, Prime Minister, and
her Conservative Party were
pushing for privatization and
reduction in monies spent on
animal health, e.g. farmers
were being paid one-half of
the animal's worth; therefore,
no incentive to declare sus-
pected animals, simply to get
them to market quickly. Ellis
mentioned reductions in
Canada in inspection staff,
especially in Ontario and fed-
erally.
With politicians in Britain
struggling to save face and
hopefully their re-election,
were it not so tragic a situa-
tion, it would be laughable.
Radio Canada International

that the British Government
is going to sue the European
Union for banning British

meat, the same European
Union that agreed to provide
70% of the money needed to
reimburse British farmers.
Also, the British
Government, according to the
media, is to dispose of all the
older cows, yet some scien-
tists have confirmed the
scrapie/BSE agent has now
been found in calves under
six months of age. The
French government recently
announced the destruction of
thousands of calves horn
from the semen of British
stock; Holland will destroy
some 65,000 cattle.
I find it unfortunate that i
have found it necessary to put
my views before the con-
sumer but I myself would
want to know. Today life is
full of dangers and decisions
to protect ourselves. We won-
der about pesticides on our
crops and vegetables, even
lawns; will BST to make
cows give more milk he
approved in Canada; infor-
mation that forty towns will
have to install infiltration
plants to make the water safe;
growth hormones in cattle,
drugs, etc. The latest concern
is whether government will
approve the transportation of
plutonium from around the
world's armaments to the
Bruce Nuclear plant. This
material will go over Huron
County roads. Once again the
situation revolves around
money with governments
advising how consumers will
save on their electrical bills.
(Ta me this is just like
Whelan saving money by not
trying to eradicate scrapie in
sheep.)
It is hoped that i have
