Boiling issue
Water quality is a boiling
issue in the Georgian Bay
tourist town of Collingwood
where officials and some
doctors posed for reporters'
cameras recently drinking tap
water, and the town's lawyers
sent letters to Toronto news-
papers warning them not to
use .the word "epidemic" in
stories.
But doctors and researchers
at the Simcoe County Health
Unit say they have identified.
at (east 30 certain cases of
crypotospoidium infection in
Collingwood residents, and
another 150 probable cases.
The town does not have a
water treatment plant but
Collingwood Council, the
town's PUC and many per-
manent residents feel water is
as safe, as always and the
Simcoe health unit has dam-
aged Collingwood's tourist
image and caused panic.
They lay fault on a few
"careless" individuals in the
health unit.
"I have drunk, bathed and
showered in the water, and
nothing has happened to me
or my family," says the
town's director of community
development. "There is no
water problem here and there
has never been a water prob-
lem here."
Foolish practice
A 23 -year-old St. Marys
man, Eric Weiggers, died of
electrocution last Thursday
morning while installing a
compact -sized satellite dish
on a hydro pole.
The manager of the St.
Marys PUC said installing
sdtellite dishes on hydro
poles "shouldn't be common
practice anywhere."
