The Huron Expositor, 1996-04-17, Page 22 -TNS HURON EXPOSITOR, April 17, 1991 Flock of 370 around Seaforth in 1982 Sheep destroyed because of strange virus experts now say may cause "Mad Cow Disease Way back in 1982, an entire flock of 370 Seaforth-area sheep was destroyed on orders from the Canadian government because it was infected with scrapie, the viral disease experts now claim may have led to the so- called "Mad Cow Disease" now decimating the British beef industry, and a fatal brain disease in humans which is becoming more common in England. These experts say the virus that may have caused the epi- demic of "Mad Cow Disease" and increased inci- dence of the always fatal Creutzteldt-Jakob disease in humans may have crossed over in the early 1980s when English cattle feed was sup- plemented with offal of scrapie -infected sheep which may have included the remains of the dead beasts' brains, a practice banned_in 1989 in the U.K. - The link between sheep. cattle and people with the ter- rifying disease that turns brains to "mush" is a matter of much scientific. and .politi- cal debate. No one seems sure. Nevertheless,: a story- by Wilma Oke in the June 9, Four projects this year Council accepts tender for Seaforth roads 1982 edition of The Huron Expositor told the story of the large scrapie infected flock of sheep in the Seaforth area, at the Adams -Dale farm on Highway 8. Edith Baker was 10 years building up her flock to 370, "staying up nights during the birthing season and giving all her devoted personal atten- tion," Oke wrote. "It was heartbreaking to see the whole flock trucked off to Toronto. She assisted with the loading, calling many of them by. name." A tender for $123,881:50 from'Lavis Contracting Co. Ltd. for road reconstruction and paving in town this year was accepted by.Seaforih Council at last Tuesday's meeting. - - Four projects are in the works: one block on both John and High Streets, recon- struction on Railway St and the completion of Lloyd Eisler St: Tuckersmith Township's share of the latter work, -bor- dering the municipalities; is $9405; which leaves a net of $114,476.50 as Seaforth's share of the tender; plus engi- neering fees. . The Lavis. tender .was the -- lowest lowest of those submitted. _ Work isn.'t scheduled to start .until July .2, when ' Works Superintendent John Forrest who is recovering from injury should be avail- able to supervise, . with August 15 the aim for com- pletion. Administrator Jim Crocker told council a gravel and pavement extension would cost "about $12,000, and curb- ing urbing would bring the total to $18,000, and improvements would be subject to agree- meptt with businesses, partic- ularly Boilersmith, which this portion of Railway Street accesses. Council is considering extending the Railway Street reconstruction, about another six metres or 20 feet, to the east of Main Street, which is being developed. Oke reported scrapie had a there's no danger of this long incubation period, 36. being in the meat, but I months or longer. believe the public should be Scrapie had been discov- made aware so people can ered in the Baker flock the make up their own minds," previous year, with she said to Oke in the 1982 Leiscesters very susceptible story, in which she ques- and dying quickly. tioned the similarity between "She was notified by the scrapie and Alzheimer health and animals branch of - Disease and said eradication Agriculture Canada a week was the policy then "so that ago .Tuesday {back in 1982) her sheep would be picked up on Thursday and compensa- tion would he paid," the Expositor reporter continued: :"Mrs. Baker says the com- pensation is at least $9,000 less than she should get on the market." WHAT EXPERTS SAID An expert of the time,- Dr. Tom Wilson of the Toronto office of. health of animals, said "emphatically" there is no threat to humans" from the disease. Oke's story also quoted a doctor in the same branch saying that "when a scrapie -infected flock is slaughtered only the carcass meat is sold to the public and the brains are destroyed. Baker was informed -the infected sheep had been ren- dered down: - Mrs. Baker was not so sure then, and remains not so sure now, 15 years later. - "The government says • Culprits concern • • • Crime Stoppers of.
