Nuclear weapons' fuel may roll through Huron soon Fuel from U.S. nuclear bombs may soon he rolling through Huron County. Terry Squire from Ontario Hydro was on hand at the March 7 meeting Of County C.Tuncil to ask for some puh- lic input and support for fur- ther study regarding the'trans- portatiorl of radioactive mater- ial along Canadian public highway including Huron County roads. Squire's request centered on a proposed plan to transport plutonium from U.S. nuclear weapons to fuel the. reactors at the Bruce Nuclear Power Development near Tiverton. According to Squire. if the proposal is approved, the plu- tonium from U.S. nuclear weapons would he mixed with other materials to reduce it from a 90 per cent pure weapon's grade to a two per New Huron no parking by-law Huron County will adopt no -parking bylaws on county roads similar to Elgin County after the Agriculture and Public Works Committee asked Acting County Engineer Sandra Lawson to investigate the- matter. Huron County historically had to pass a no parking bylaw for each individual municipality upon their request. Grey and Middlesex follow the same procedure as Huron. Bruce County uses its own staff to enforce no parking on county roads. But Elgin County recently amended their parking bylaw which authorizes the warden and clerk to sign agreements with municipalities to appoint enforcement officers to enforce no parking. Committee wants employees' input on future of highways Huron County's Agriculture and Public Works Committee has asked employees of the Highways Department for input on shaping the depart- ment's future. "Like all county depart • - mentse Highways faces provincial funding cutbacks, changing service levels. an expanded roads system and a continuing public require- ment for excellent roads," stales the committee report. "Huron has built a proud reputation for having one of the hest county road systems in the province. This reputa- tion was gained by the dedi- cation of employees over generations." The committee is looking for input from employees on setting goals. identifying opportunities and problems and then suggesting solutions and actions. A kick-off meeting was held March 14 at the Auburn Community Hall. The Agriculture and Public Works Committee also dis- tributed a Roadway Service Standards report to county council on March 28.
