At Goderich tournament

Seaforth bantams bounced 4-2 twice by Swedes
Seaforth's bantams put on a
good show in their final out-
ing of the season and were
the only team that came close
to SKA Sweden in a four -
team minor hockey tourna-
ment with an international
flavour at Goderich on the
weekend.
Seaforth lost 4-2 in the
championship Sunday night,
and also lost by a score of 4-2
when the two teams went
head-to-head during the tour-
nament Saturday night.
The tournament was rela-
tively poorly attended.
Organizers say they expected
more fans.
Meanwhile the Swedes
demolished the other two
bantam teams in the tourna-
ment. They beat Goderich
12-0 and Clinton 18-3 in
weekend preliminary games.
Seaforth beat Goderich 6-1
and Clinton 7-2 in the pre-
liminaries.
The Swedes scored two
unanswered goals in the third
period to win Sunday's
championship.
Everett Smith put Seaforth
on the board first in the open-
ing period, but the Swedes
were up 2-1 mid -way through
the second.
Scott Van Dooren fed
Derek Nesbitt who sent J.D.
Nolan away on a two -on -one
break with 1:19 left in the
second, and he lit the lamp
making it a 2-2 tie entering
the final 20 minutes.
The Swedes scored thc win-
ning goal on a breakaway,
and iced it with their final
score on a bad bounce.
"We could have won just as
easy as we lost," Seaforth
coach Jason Papple said. "We
can hold our heads up high."
The Seaforth bantams
recently won this season's
WOAA title.
Seaforth goalie Scan
Ludwig, and Sweden's goalie
were named most valuable
players for their teams after
the linal game.
Seaforth snipers and goalies
also swept the shootout com-
petitions on both days of the
tournament.
Nolan and goalie Dan
O'Reilly won Saturday, while
Ludwig and Van Dooren won
Sunday.

Swedish team (Jens Jonsson) that edged the locals twice on the weekend at at tourna-
ment in Goderich. The Swedes ran roflghshod over the bantam teams from Clinton and

Not only Canadians nuts about hockey
by John Greig
There's much similar
between Huron and Ekero
County, Sweden, the munici-
pality in which the Ska [K
(bantam) hockey team now
visiting Goderich is based.
In a tournament in Goderich
on the weekend, the Swedish
squad romped all over area
area bantam teams except
Seaforth's, edging them 4-2 in
Sunday night's final, which by
all reports was a fast -paced
and entertaining encounter.
Seaforth skates well hut the
Swedes skated better, edging
them by an identical 4-2 score
in their opening tournament
game Saturday night.
Ekero County is a collection
of islands 25 km west of
Stockholm. But the real com-
mon bond is community
minded folk with a love of
hockey.
"Where ['m from, it's like
here," said Kalle Rahm, cap-
tain of the Ska IK team.
The 17 players and their
families are billeted with fam-
ilies in Goderich while their
families have been staying at a
downtown inn.
Rahm has been staying with
Ken Crawford and his family.
Crawford is the co-ordinator
of the trip from thc Goderich
end. Crawford's son Nick, a
Peewee who's playing up with
the bantams, said their game
against the Swedes on
Saturday was "fast and fun."
The Swedes won 12-0.
Rahm observed it was a
"good game, at least for the
first five or six minutes of the
first period. Then we started
to score."
Rahm said he's learned that
Canadian players arc good at
body checking.
Weird requests
Shakespeare translated
into English is'onc of the
stranger requests asked of
bookstore employees in
Canada, according to a mar-
keting firm collecting anec-
dotes.
A Calgary clerk "painstak-
ingly showed a customer
every available hook on
dinosaurs only to discover
that she wanted one with
photographs, not artists'
impressions."
A customer in Pickering
asked for Coles Notes on a
Danielle Steel book.
"We try to play like this at
home, but it's harder here."
When asked what the
Canadian and Swedish boys
are doing in Goderich, Rahm
said shopping and playing
hockey.
All Rahm's answers contain
some reference to hockey. The
Ska IK team has a dedication
and fanaticism for thc game
we often mistakenly Iccl is a
private reserve for Canadians.
The boys on the Ska Tcam
80, representing boys horn in
1980, have played together for
eight years and have little else
in their lives other than hock-
ey. During the season they are
on the ice three or four times a
we. k and do extensive off -ice
training during the off-season
three to four times a week.
Those training methods
were •in evidence before the
games as the full team of
green sweatsuit clad Swedes
jogged along the streets and
around the hall diamonds near
the arena, stopping to stretch
and play leapfrog.
The organization of hockey
is a bit diffcrent.in Sweden
than in Canada. The IK at the
end of Ska means sports club
in Swedish and thc club the
boys belong to has a long his-
tory in all kinds of sports.
The Ska sports club was
founded in 1934 and in the
beginning the main sports in
the club were handy, soccer,
track and field athletics and
cross country skiing. Today
the club has more than 1,700
members and hockey is the
main sport, along with soccer.
The Ska sports club has
only been playing in an indoor
rink since 1989. Before, all
hockey games were played
outside.

ing to the promotional
