April is cancer month. Unlike previous years when canvassers went on a one-night blitz, this year vol- unteers will be visiting hous- es in the Seaforth arca throughout the month. Last year, almost $15,000 was raised in the Seaforth arca during the one-night campaign. "This year we are trying to call on as many people as possible, so please open your door when one of our volun- teers knocks," says Bev Jackson, chair of the province's fundraising com- mittee. Donations raised by the Canadian Cancer Society are used to educate the public about prevention and early detection of cancer, provide services to people living with cancer and their families, and fund cancer research. The society also fights cancer through its lobbying efforts. "Research has uncovered a lot about cancer, but we need to learn more if we want to win the battle," says Jackson. A recent example of good news in research is the dis- covery of a drug that stops the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells which could lead to effective treatment for leukemia, the most common form of cancer in children. Funds from the Canadian Cancer Society supported this vital research by Dr. Chaim Roifman and his asso- ciates at the Hospital for Sick Children. According to 1994 figures from the Canadian Cancer Society, over a five year peri- od, 46 per cent of donations were used for research, 22 per cent for patient services, 19 per cern for health promo- tion, seven per cent for fundraising and six per cent for administration. One in three Canadians will develop some form of cancer during his or her lifetime. Hullett Council accepts four budgets Hullett Council accepted four budgets from arenas and fire hoards in Seaforth and Blyth last month. Hullett's share of the 1996. municipal levy for the Seaforth Area Fire Committee is $5,142, and $888 for the Seaforth and District Community Centres. "We do have correspondence with the province. The community care access centre -,the peo- ple who will be looking after long term care a.: of next January - we have dialogue with them. We are co-operat- ing with them. Nobody is -suffering in terms of care," said Murray. SEWER WORK Seaforth is looking at installing its sanitary sewer line on County Road 12 through thc town in 1997. The long range plan has thc county resurfacing the road in 1997. The county public works committee recommended that' resurfacing be delayed until 1998 to allow for settling if Seaforth plans to proceed with sewer work next year. ' The Village of Brussels is planning to replace the water - main under County Road 16 in 1997. It will he recon- structed the same year. Council also passed a motion not to charge the Londesboro Lions Club building permit and garbage fees for the Londesboro Hall. Al Bosman of the service club attended the meeting. Council granted approval to have air-conditioning installed in its 1985 grader at an approximate cost of $5,000, plus labour per- formed by the roads depart- ment. Among other matters, council supported a resolu- tion received from West Lorne urging the province to eliminate the dual school board system in Ontario, and did not support a resolution from the Huron -Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School Board which asked that school boards he exempt from municipal user fees. Hullett carried a motion to write off the 1993 and 1994 business tax, plus penalties, of the former UCO property at Auburn. Total accounts of $61,135.21 for February were approved, passed and paid, which includes general accounts of $42,907.65 and road accounts of $18,227.56. Landowner's life 'put on hold' waiting for landfill drilling BY DAVID SCOTT Expositor Editor ' There were concerns raised by West Wawanesh Reeve Bob Hallam at the March 28 session of Huron .County Council that studie4i on alter- natives to the county's pro- posed landfill site in Ashfield Township wouldn't be ready in time for councillors to review. - "Is it going to be in a report prior to council meeting?. Will we have time to look over the reviews?" , "The report will he present- ed at the April (planning and development) committee, said chair Pat Down, Reeve of Usborne. Hallam also had concerns about when drilling would take place. "If we are going to drill. We should be considering the Vandals destroy Vandals set fire to the shack civil service strikers were using for shelter outside the Ministry 'of Natural Resources on Highway 4 out - landowner. Jim (Allan J. Gibson, Reeve of Ashfield) has been on hold for two years of his life. We have not got this site drilled to see if. it's sound and will ,meet the criteria. 1 think if l was in Mr. Gibsorfh shoes,'d want to know ,,orC, y t,hhho other," said If 1iam. "We are creating tension. We could end up with this site not passing with the drilling. We could end up owning a farm." "The main meeting of county council will decide what we're going to do about that. When we read the alter- native studies, that's the day 'that'we'll have a big decision to make. The drilling is 'on hold until then. We're not going ahead with stage three until after we've looked at the alternative studies," said Down. strikers' shack side of Wingham on March 23.
