HAPPY TO BE HUNGRY - The First Presbyterian Youth Group of Seaforth completed their third 30 -hour famine on the
weekend at the church. The dozen youths went without food from Friday at 11 a.m. to Saturday at 5 p.m. when they fin-
ished the day with pizza, donuts and ice cream. Donations frorn sponsors go to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

up. Sometimes the younger
skaters are surprised when
Hunt heats them.
At first some people found
litt!c hit unusual to have
<txnconc my agc out skating
with them. [3ut the accep-
tance has corns with time and
with the fact that I've skated
well. When you're out there
skating you're not soine-
body's mom or a 42 -year-old ,
woman. You're a ,speed '
skater that want.: to go.as fast
as possihle and heat the, other
guy. .,
Hunt has developed a lot of
friendships and camaraderie
with the kids she skates,
against. -
"Recently it's been really
rewarding., I"vc got, positive
comments and cheers and'.
congratulations from people
who welch me skate and hove.
watcircd me move up.'"
Ft1TURE GOALS
Hunt plans to stick with
speed skating for awhile.
"My long term goal is to he
as fast as I can for as long as
i can because 1 love it. 1' m '
hoping next year to compete
in the national team trials
which is the ranking meet for
all of Canada."
In just Iwo years, Carla will
he 'in the open category and
mother and daughter will
have a chance to compete
against each other.
"We've both been looking
forward to the thought of rac-
ing against each other.
There's a number of sister -
sister or hrothcr-hrothcr pairs
in skating but not too many
mom. and daughter [airs.
Most of the skaters you skate
against you have a friendship
with and then when you're
out on the ice you become
competitive. As soon as the
race is over there's the friend-
ship. I think the closer you
are to somebody the more fun
it is to race againstthem."
Kathy says although she
has the edge on Carla with
speed skating, they're ah'out
equal when they strap on
hockey skates.
"She's a very talented hock-
ey player. She's hcen'playin&
boys' hockey 'since she was
.five years old.'ti
Hunt says speed skating
and hockey help each .other.
"With s jded`"slrtiq you'
improve your efficiency and
the strength of your push.
Hockey I find helpful
because the quickness of it
trains your legs to move'
quickly." '
• NATIONAL RACES
Both Kathy and Carla will
compete, in four different
races at the Canadian cham-
pionships. Kathy will skate in
the senior A category in the
500, 1,000, 1.,500 and 3,000
metre races. Carla will skate
500, 666. 777 and 1,000
metre competitions. In the
North American's as a mas-
ter, Kathy will skate 500,
777; 1,000 and 1,500 metre
races.
Her favourite races are the
two extremes - 500 and
3,000. "in the 500, you gi,
100 per cent, all out. All you
want to do is just go faster.
Throw caution to the wind.
The 3.000 I really like
hccausc my strength is
endurance. It's a very strate-
gic race.'',
The 3,00( metre race is 27
laps Of the 111 -metre short
track.
MEU.IA ATTENTION
"At times. of the year, there
is a lot of media attention hut
it's fun. And hopefully it will
end up getting me a sponsor:"

IT'S WINTER SPORTS SEASON
... but not for long!
It may seem like the winter sports season has
just begun, but it won't be long until teams end
their year with thoughts of spring and baseball
and soccer. Sometimes, the team has already
disbanded when some parent or coach realizes,
"We didn't have a picture taken!" Before you
wrap up your season of hockey, ringette or
other winter sports..make sure you arrange to
have a photo taken for The Huron Expositor's
popular Sports edition. You can borrow black
and white film from the newspaper, take a
colour photo with your own camera or have a professional photographer take a pic-
ture of your team. Just be sure to. submit the photo to The Huron Expositor (with
names listed underneath) by the deadline of Friday, April 19th by 5 p.m. If you are
unable to make these arrangements, contact a member of The Huron Expositor
sports news team to have a photo taken for the edition. We would like to include all
local winter sports teams, but this is only possible with your co-operation. Thanks
for your he ip!
