FAMILY SPORT
That love of sports has been
passed On to Hunt's family.
"I think it's great to give
your kids the gift of fitness.
Because if ybu -grow up fit
and active, it's always some--
thing
ome-thing you want to go hack
to."
The family cross-country
tikiis, horsetrack rides and
bikes and runs together.
All four of Hunt's children
are now into speed skating.
They almost all began right
after Kathy did five years
ago.
"After 1 started speed skat-
ing, they noticed my enthusi-
asm and bit by hit they joined
inc."
The oldest, Carla, was an
Ontario Winter Games
medalist last year and is the
bronze medalist for juvenile
girls this year.
Aside from being a top
speed skater, she is a great
hockey player as well. She
plays on the Brussels boys
pee wee rep team and house -
league team. "Even though
she's little, she holds her
own." Carla also excels at
soccer, volleyball, running,
track and field and an "A'`
student, her mother points
out.
The two boys, Bryce, 11,
,nd Brett. 8, are both keen
.t the sport. Even the
:. oungest, Cayli, 5; has the
speed skating hug. "She
found a pair of rollerhlades in
the closet when she was
three -years -old and put them
on and she's been skating
ever since. Shc skates in
what's call the Cradle Class,
"My long term
goal is to be a.'
fast as'1 can for
as long aS 1
can.
which is kids six and under.
They halve short races and all
get a prize at the .end."
Husband John. 46. doesn't
speed skate but plays hockey
instead. He keeps busy as a
part-time farmer and full-
time veterinarian with Newry
Veterinarian Service in
Atwood. The wholc.family
works together as a team
when it comes to sports
though. Co-ordinating who's
where what night. and whose
turn it is to drive. keeps John
and Kathy Ilusy.
All four children skate with
their mother at 'the Kitchener
club. "It's a true family sport.
I enjoy the fact that we all
participate together at the
game time. We practise that
way. And we go to meets and
all compete at the same
time."
The Kitchener club has ice
two to three times a week and
Hunt also skates in London
once a week. "Since the
provincials. Carla and I have
been skating with the
Cambridge club which has an
elite program."
Kathy and Carla skate in an
amateur provincial circuit
during the season and com-
pete against skaters from
Kingston. Cambridge.

PRACTICE ON POND
A pond on the family farm
serves as a practice sight for
skating but is used mostly for
pond hockey which the
whole family plays.
"The pond is a lot of fun.
There's been a lot of good
times spend on it. We clean it
as a family. Neighbours come
over and friends and. play
pond hockey. It's totally non-
competitive and just for fun.
In the -summertime we swim
in the pond."
