Gose but no cigar
Hawks end Cents' season
The -Seaforth Centenaires
put the Exeter Hawks on the
ropes but couldn't finish
them off. so fell four games
'to three in their Ontario
Hockey Association junior
division final last week.
Their- season ended Friday,
seven months to the day atter
it began last August.
The Hawks won the sev-
enth and deciding garne 4-1
in front of more than 800
fans at Exeter, three -deep and
standing room only.
it was scoreless after the
first period, but the Hawks
struck twice on the power-
play by the 11:20 mark of the
second, and Seaforth never
got those goals hack.
The Centenaires had their
chances. many -times during
the well -played rubber
match. while their goaltender
Scott Wood kept them in the
game with some clutch fin-
ger -in -the -dike stops, but just
couldn't put it in thc other
team's net.
The Hawks increased their
lead to 3-0 before Cents'
captain Jason Dunscith, with'
his final goal as a junior, sift-
ed a bit of a "knuckleball"
behind Exeter goaltender•
Dave Nahrgang with seconds
left in thc second period..
The Hawks' keeper also
shone in his six starts in the
series.
Exeter got the goal that iced
the Morenz Division crown
about six minutes into the
third. They go on to meet the
defending OHA Junior
"D'.'evelopmcnt League
champion Thamesford
Trojans in the conference
final.
The Cents will have to be
satisfied knowing they cap-
tured Scaforth's fancy and
beat a team that only lost -four
games all the regularr season,
twice -on the road and three •
times in eight nights ta set up
Friday's finale. • •
But they were inconsistent,
on and off. all year.
It was a gritty. talented
hockey team. that finished in
third-place and posted its
fourth -hest regular season
record in the club's 23 -year •
history, then stunned the sec-
ond -place Lucan Irish in five
games in the first round.
A BAD HABiT' -
Co -rookie head -coach Jim
Campbell says the Cents -let "
opponents off the -ropes in
.games all year, it was a bad
habit, perhaps indicating
lack of experience, compared
to those teams remaining in -
this year's JDL "Final Four".
But he and the rest of this
year's all -rookie local coach-
ing staff, head coach Dave
-Murray and assistant Dave
Akey, are "satisfied" for their
first go -round behind a junior
bench.
"Sure, we would have liked
to win," Campbell says, " but
we did better than a lot of
people expected and this
team has class."
"We learned some things
we would definitely do dif-
ferently next time." he says.
The beginning of the end
unfolded in thc first period
in seventh game
last Wednesday night in front
of a packed rink in Seaforth,
with the Cents' fresh off .their
second -straight 2-1 win in the
series the night before at
Exeter, and up three games to
two in the playoff. a win
away from -an upset. -
OFF THE ROPES
The Cents jumped to a 1-0
Icad but then hacked off and
.seemed a bit "starstruck",
once again all of a sudden
playing relatively -poorly in
front of a big - home crowd.
perhaps losing their focus
and falling behind 4-1 after
the first period.
It was fairly even from then
on, hut thc early lapse
allowed the Hawks to escape
with a 7-4 win to even the
series, and set up the sudden -
death showdown in their own.
rink two nights later.
Jason. Hayter scored on two
booming slapshots from the
point. and Dwight Gingcrich
and Steve Mclnalty scored
the other Centenaires' goals.
Tuesday's 2-1 win at Exeter
was simply a dandy. in front
of more than 600. It was
scoreless until the Hawks
scored with Tess than two,
.minutes left in :the second
period. -
But J. C. Kirk got that one
hack for Seaforth midway
through the third. when Jason
Henderson scooted down the
aleft wirrg and found twine.
cleanly on the short side;
high to the stick side ofNahrgang with less than !bur.
minutes Icft. It stood as the
winner.
But the excitement .wasn't
quite over.
The Cents won it the hard
way. preserving the dream by
playing shorthanded for the -
last 1:57 of the game. Wood
was onceagain excellent'.
Friday night's -loss marked
the end of their junior careers
for a pair of Centenaires' vet-
erans. both now overage.
Kalen Carroll and Dunscith,
with seven years in Seaforth
colours between them.
St. James wins senior B
Mt. Carmeibeat Kinkora 5-4 for the senior A championship
Sunday night,: atter Zurich won the junior A crown Saturday
in the annual Knights of Columbus Hockey Tournament in
Seaforth on the weekend.
Seaforth St. James won the senior consolation B title on
shots, after skating to a 2-2 tic with St. Marys in regulation
time; with Jamic Hill and Barry Noakes scoring for thc locals.
St. Marys won the junior 13 title on shots, after tying Exeter
3-3 in regulation. -
Twenty teams played in the annual two-day tournament,
now in its 33rd scason,m as close as anyone can figure.
Complete tournament results, with all the local snipers, will
appear in next week's SCOREBOARD.
