The Irish found it took
more than luck to make this
St. Patrick's Day, as
Seaforth's Centenaires culled
them from - the Ontario
Hockey Association Junior
"D"evelopment League play-
offs in five -games with last
-Wednesday night's 8-4 win' at
.Lucan.
Eight teams remain in the
_ hunt for thc OHA title.
.. Two of the top contenders -
the Exeter Hawks and
Centenaires - now square off
in a best -of -seven series -for
all the marbles in the
Morenz Division.
The series began -last night
in Exeter, after this paper
went to press. It -resumes
tonight -(Wednesday) in
Seaforth at 8:15 p.m. Game
three is at Exeter Friday
night, with the fourth hack at
Seaforth Sunday. Both are.
8:30 starts.
The "smart money" says
Exeter should prevail. The -
Hawks were far and away the
hest team -in all divisions of
both conferences during the
regular schedule, with 30
wins, four- Tosses and another.
four ties: They also scored.
the most goals and gave up
thc fewest.
The Cents finished 18
points behind them, in third
place in the Moretti, and only
managed to glean_oneof a
possihte IO points, by virtue
of an overtime loss, from the
five occasions the two teams
went head-to-head.
The Hawks heat the Cents
6-1,antL4-2 in Seaforth, and
5-1-and'542 wild 6-5 in OT in
Exeter: They last played_
each other six weeks ago on
Super Bowl Sunday at
Hensal.l, where the Hawks
once again won, 3- I . .
Veterans Chris Kennedy
.and Nate Burns were, the
most effective. Exeter for-•
Wards in their games against
the cents,
Then again,_ thc "smart
money" would have given
the nod to Lucan too, a cou-
plcof weeks ago. But there is
no denying the Hawks arc a
far more complicated,kettic
of fish than the Irish were.
They are better coached and
have more depth, on top of
better goaltending and overall
speed.
"Discipline, team unity and
hard work is what we will
need to upset Exeter," says
Centenaires' captain Jason
Dunseilh, a four-year veteran
with the team.
MAYBE # 1
, "This squad ranks up there,
maybe number 1." `Dunce'
adds. "We have a good bal-
ance of guys compared to
years before. when some
guys weren't there to win."
Seaforth head coaches Dave
Murray and Jim Campbell
are playing it close to thc
vest. not saying anything that
.could he pinned up in the
Hawks' dressing room and
used as motivation against
them."
"It wasn't us, it was them,'
Murray says, pointing to the
dressing room after the
Cents' 6:30 practice Sunday
morning.
"They played game in and
game out against Lucan,"
Campbell says. "We'll have
to play that way again against
Exeter."
"Whcn all three lines are
going it makes the difference
whether wc win or lose."
assistant coach Dave Akey
adds.
With Exeter and Seaforth
being just up the road from
cach other and old rivals, the
series should pack both are-
nas. The Hawks drew about
700 fans in their final game
against North Middlesex. and
have hit 40G fans consistently
on home Friday night's. dur-
ing thc season.

Seaforth's Dave McLlwain
was on a line with two of
houkey's hest players aftcr
sighing with Pittsburg last
week• and scored two goals
and an assist in his first two
games back in thc NHL. on a
line with Mario Lemieux and
Ron Francis.
