"push polls", which work to
turn public sentiment against
teachers, but noted, "1'he
biggest concern is the stu-
dents and the impact on stu-
dents" that planned goveni-
rncnt cuts could have.
Another sore, point with the
teachers is the fact that d 1in-
istcr of Education John
Snobclen has stated that edu-
cation in Ontario is the most
expensive in Canada. Laurie
countered that on a ixr pupil
spending basis, Ontario trails
British Columbia, the North-
west Territories, Manitoba,
Quebec .and the Yukon in
spending.
Other concerns tcachcrs
have cxpresscd.are in regards
to special education, English
as a second language and
adult education, alt of which
are threatened hy.government
cuts. Laurie added that
tcachcrs arc also concerned
about welfare cuts, cuts to
second stage housing and cuts
in social services, as "kids
can't learn if thcy arc hungry
and don't feel safe."
While tcachcrs will be-
taking thcir concerns regard-
ing education as a whole to
Hamilton, protesting groups,
including auto workers, the
Canadian Union of Public
Employees, and the Ontario
Public Service Employees
Union will be working to
support each other's causes.
Among those riding in the.
live buses from Huron will be
members of 'the Huron
Women Teachers' Federation,
the Ontario Public Schools
Teachers' Federation, the
Ontario Secondary- Schools
Teachers' Federation and the W
Ontario English Catholic
Teachers' Association.
'C'ustodians and secretaries
from area schools will also be
in attendance, as Laurie stated
w • are all educational
kers. The cuts arc going W
to affect everyone."
