We'll be muzzling our children next Dear Editor; In the past weeks I've read a 'nuniber 01 letters in regards to the_ proposed bylaw to muzzle pit bulls and uich with a S 11N)/year registration. To be honest, 1 can't believe this bylaw is even being con- sidered. The next thing you know, we'll be told to muzzle or put restraints on our children, too. After all, our pels are mem- bers of our family. Are they not? That's how it is at my house. In a lot of homes, pets have been with us since they were ' babies. just' like our children. And just like our kids, we love, nurture our pets, teaching them right from wrong. - I agree with the comment in last week's editorial by Heather Billson that a dog's behaviour starts with the owner. The same can be said about children. In some cases a child's upbringing influences their lives as adults. if a child grows up without the love, affection and guidance they need, it could influence their teenage and adult lives. It's a known fact that pets and children respond better to warmth and then, actions reflect that. When a child grows up see- ing physical, mental or emo- tional violence and ends up being a troubled teen or a murderous adult people tend to say, "No wonder, look at their childhood." The same for pets. If someone gets a puppy and soon after gives it little or no attention, maybe the odd kick, that puppy could grow up with the feeling of being ignored and react in a negative fashion. Let me relate a story of a pit hull that disproves that all are just plain vicious. About five years ago a young couple Iltnow were expecting their first child. Their fust "human" child, that is. You see they had a beautiful one and a half year old pit bull named "Tara" that they had since the age of six weeks. They did everything with and for Tara and she was as gentle as could bc. When baby Amber was born there were natural concerns of jealousy on Tara's part, but she seemed to understand that this little person was harmless and defenceless. As Amber grew so. did the relationship between the two. When Tara had puppies of her own her disposition. changed very little. She was protective -of her babies as any mother is, but not to the point of snapping at people, biting or even worse, attacking someone. She told you to back off with a low growl. And as you should Just what is a ' pit bull cross'? what will it look like that can As for that remark .that "they he identified as "pit bull" or find it hard to distinguish cross? children from other dogs" - Another question I have is that is so ridiculous it doesn't by what criterion is a terrier to really deserve comment. Sul, he judged the ."ferocious pit lice' it to say that they still .hull" or a -"cross"! -- who have noses. - among your enure Ixtpulation,- Let us not forget that it is in would recogniic the ancient pit all terriers' nature to he feisty hull, let alone -a cross of that around other dogs and early .hreed'! 1 can. grve you the obedience training should be names of five different breeds, given. Betcha no wrong impression of the dogs! one will win! - - Dorothy Bassett Dear Editor, . Both Anita Hansen and Heather Lynne Billson have stated the case admirably .14 the so-called "pit bull" and i have just a couple of points to add. - Onc is in the original item in the Jan. 24 issi'c.-Just what is a "pit bull cross' ? What has been called a pit hull was a. cross itself, as the generally accepted origin is that the ancient Bull Dog (not to lx; confused with the present day English. Bull Dog, which is completely inno- cent) -was crossed with the English Black and Tan Terrier (now known as the Manchcs-• ter) during the 18th century.' Now, if you take that cross and breed it to any outer breed at all, or to any other cross (you get a "double cross"! Ha!!) - Run museum with volunteers like fire-fighters Dear Editor, before suhsidiiing the county I was quite surprised to read museum with another S3(N1,0(N) county- council coverage of of county tax pay- rs• .money in thou February I meeting 1996. devoted to Huron County - Taxpayers* of the county museum director and curator would he able to redirect Claus Breede - delending the ' 2:51).O(10 of- museum funding t museum's role in the cominun- • by operating the Inilseum w ith ity. As Mr. Breede spited in the article, figures quoted in my recent Icttcr to the editor "Can we afford a county museum in Huron?," were correct and obtained from the museum. Maybe Huron County Coun- cil should look at some of the situations of other Ontario museums that -are losing fund- ing from cities and counties - Thanks for donations Dear Editor, On behalf of the CDA (Cana- dian Diabetic Association), 1 would like to thank the people of Seaforth, Harpurhey and Egmondville for their generous donations, which totalled 53,151. It was very disappointing riot to have any OMAFRA staff at our recent 4-11 annual meeting. In the past the Rural Community Advisors have worked well with the local 4-H association. but it appears thev now want to sever all ties to 4- H. I feel their absence at our annual meeting has nothing to do with upcoming cutbacks and shows their apparent lack of interest for 4-11 in Huron County. So it goes to show you that pit bulls are a breed just like your dog and mine. • One thing I disagree -with though in Heather's letter is that the owners of dogs over. 50lbs. should be charged the 5100 a'year. Dogs conic in all sizes and shapes - just like people - and should be recog- nized as a fact of life. Any dog i an be dangerous whatever it Weighs.. As the owner of an Atika who stands quite tall am - weighs well over 50 lbs., I an totally against the proposed bylaw. if someone feels the need to comment, feel free to do so. SWEET TOOTH by Craig Nicholson (1e1995 by Craig Nicholson. All rights reserved.) I like my trail food. Sled snacking keeps my mouth moist and my body warm. It also keeps me awake and stops my stomach from making rude noises. Not that they'd be heard over the engine, but I'd know they were there. - Over the years I've tned a cornucopia of candy. a bunch of bars. a plethora of provisions and even munched, a dog cookie by mistake. I can't say that I've found the perfect food yet. but the search goes on. I started with real pioneer fare - jerky. Named. I suppose, after the whiplash inflicted on my neck when that stubbom piece I've torn at for five minutes suddenly breaks loose. Not for denture wearers. jerky is a dried strip of meat that, judging from its toughness, may Well be a remnant from some old hide store. Jerky requires at least one free Vand to anchor tt against the pull of my teeth and takes about as long to masticate as a gold cud chew. It's difficult enough to move my mandibles with my chin strap tightened down and when I made the mistake of trying to eat a whole piece at once. d was like choking on a soggy tennis ball all the way from Sudbury to Timmins. Not your prime ride 'n' eat treat. ' Next I tried trail mix. I though that was what we put in our sleds before oil injection. But no. h proved to be more like what the squirrels and chipmunks stockpile for the winter. I bet there's even some things in that mix they wouldn't eat. Not being your ardent grain and seed eater. trail mix didn't turn my crank. Especially that batch that looked like lumpy sawdust and tasted worse. Not that I've ever sampled sawdust. but the oat bran I swallow each morning for regularity must be a near thing. Besides can you imagine my success attempting to pour a handful of loose mix into my mouth with my helmet on and sled moving? Undressing that night was like a tree shedding its seeds. My wife thought I had some exotic bowel disease. Or really bad dandruff. Still on the health kick. I moved on to granola bars .which froze into particle board. Then I bought a couple of those energy bars - you know - the ones that make men into supermen. They never made d to the snow. I sampled one in my car and promptly decided that I •could never be desperate enough to inflict that on myself again. Frozen they'd be like teething on a brick. So I switched to junk food. Now I always carry a couple of my favourite chocolate bars in my pockets. Usualty they're frozen solid. but at least gum- ming them into compliancy is rewarded by good taste. I haven't found the perfect carrying, place either. In my saddle bags, they deep freeze. In my outer pockets they are solid on the outer side and chewy on the inner, Inside my jacket they can be the consistency of fudge or hot chocolate depending on body temperature. Take it from me. dont leave any in your pocket when you get your suit cleaned. Recently. I've been sucking on hard'candies to assuage my addiction. They can't freeze any harder than they already are and seem heat resistant. A handful lasts all day. But some are real cheap tasting. like I used to get on Halloween as a kid. Maybe still the same batch. My favourite to date is Werther's Original Butterscotch Candy, a real high class taste. I'm living proof that hard candies and snorkels don't mix. Occasionally if it's real cold, 111 breath through my trusty snorkel to avoid fogging my Lace shield. First my candy inadvertently dropped into the mouthpiece. restricting air lbw. Then in hyperventilating like a beached whale, I sucked it halfway downa lung and fell off my sled in a coughing frt. Fortunately. I didn't require mouth to mouth because 1 didn't want to share my Werther's. I'm always open to new trail food Suggestions, but here's one for you: what- ever your choice, stuff those empty wrappers back into a spare pocket and dispose of them al home.
