Students can design room, build robot arm
Continued from page 2
Maertens, who is wry enthusi-
astic about the cour•;e.
The lingo is a little different
too. Instead of a list of shop
projects that _ have to be built,
the new system is "outcome -
based learning" and each mod-
ule has a "challenge."
. Safety still concern
As with the old system,
safety is still a major concern.
For every machine students use
they have to watch a video
first, then write a test on the
machine. "They must get 100
per cent," says • Maertens, or
they can't use the. machine.
Then they sigma license. "And
in one -day (at woodworking)
they make a beautiful set of
bookshelves they can take
home," he. said. -
Many of the modules have
projects or designs students can
complete in a day and take
home, to show their family.
In. ne of the kitchen mod-
ules, students make a pizza
from a store-bought mix. They
cook it in a convection oven,
cat it and then evaluate it. In
the second half of the day, they
make a pizza themselves from
scratch, cook it, cat it and
compare the two, which they
liked best. Then they can take
the re :ipe home with them.
Anoth.r part of the sank mod-
. ulc- features a computer pro-
-gram that gives students a
caloric' count on wha t• they ate
the previous day.
Most of the design and com-
munications modules feature
interesting and advanced com-
puter programs. Maertens says
'the computers were purchased
through the provinces GEMS
program and aren't paid for by
local taxpayers.
In the interior design 'nodule,
students have a chance to
design their own dream room
for the family home using a 3-
D architect computer prograni.
SPS student Chris Blake
designed.his room with a pool
table and .weight bench. The
program allows you to view
your room in 3-D on screen
and -print out a floor plan.
At the pneumatics module
students (earn the difference
between pneumatics and
• hydraulics and build a number
of Lego pneumatic machines.
Later they construct. a pneu-
matic -robotic arm.
Students crash a test model
car into a wall• at. the impact
investigation module. With the
aid ,of a computer, the impact
is measured and students try to
-lessen the impact by construct-
ing a shock -absorbent bumper
from supplied materials. _ -
The multi -media nl(xlulc is
an exciting chance for students
to work with a Power PC,
scanner and video and sound
equipment to prepare a family
video presentation to take• home
when the day is done: . _
That module is just a taste of
what students who intend
CHSS will experience in Steve
Oliver's multi -media -class for
senior high school studcnts..His
class has produced three videos
for the Huron County 13oard.of
Education and one for - the
Huron. Tourism Association,
which created tuIl-time summer
jobs for six students. Original.
music. and 3 -D --animation by
students is I'eatureil iii videos
by Oliver's class. -'
Other Tech 21 modules
include: CAD - (Computer
Assisted Design), teleeomuutni-
cations, electricity/electronics, .
desktop prescnl5tion, electric
motors, robotics, child care,
plastics, fashion design. •
"It's a challenge to keep the
modules up to date and the
computers up 10 (late," said
Macrtens. '
,(And probably the parents ,up.,
t0 date, 100! )
DAVID SCOTT PHOTO
CRASH TEST - SPS students Kimberley Jewitt, Rachel
Wood and Jody VanderVeen are set to crash a model car -
into a wall to test the impact at a Tech 21 module. The
computer measures results and students continue to
design a more shock -absorbent bumper to lessen impact. •
