Broomball champs need OT
The weather made things
dicey for organizers but the
competition remained keen at
the annual Scalia -1h - Eg-
mondvillc Manifkall 'Tour-
nament on the weekend.
Both men's and wrnucn's
championships were decided in
overtime.
It took double overtime for
Dccmerton Dusters from the
Teeswatcr area to drop the
local Dumpers 1-0 in the men's
final. Polar Ice rebounded from
an 8-0 'pasting by Parr line in
recent league play 10 bores
overtime, . before eventually
bowing to the mighty Parr
Liners in the women's final, 3-
2. The score was knotted at 1 -
.at the end of regulation.
In the "B" side finals: the
Eighth Liners from the Blyth
area beat the Legion of Broom
from Cambridge for the then.
The Blyth Rebels also teat the
Crusaders from Palmerston for
the women's B title.
The Barrie Satellites; the
defending provincial women's
champs couldn't make it here
through -Saturday's blizzard
conditions, leaving the
woolen's side with only seven
teams. But all 20 alien's teams
showed up in one form 'or
another, some with skeleton
rosters because of the storm.
The three-day tournament
which concluded Sunday night
attracted teams from brtxnnball
hotbeds across southwestern
Ontario, with only the cast
region of the province, from
around Ottawa, in represented.

Cents stymied by Hawks and Nahrgang
The Seaforth ('entenaires
struggled again in vain in I len-
sad before the Super Bowl
Sunday afternoon. They
couldn't pub the puck in the net
to save their skin so lost 3-1-
the
1-1 the still -soaring Beier 1lawks.
The fret -falling Ccntcnaires
are in third in the Min -elm
Division, three points back of
the Lucan Irish who now have
the cdgc for home -ice ad-
vantage against Seaforth in the
first round of the playoffs. The
Cents have only one win to
show against Tour loses from
their past five starts.
Those Hawks r.•ivain far and •
away the. best team so far this:
season in the Ontario Hockey
Association's -Junior
"D"evelopment League, now
- sporting a 28-2-2 record and 15
points better than the best of
the other 17 clubs. '
Seaforth did everything but
stand on their Ileacs and dance
Sunday but only managed to
beat former Gcntenaire Dave •
Nahrgang in. the Exctcr net
once, and then with a little
dribbler on a powerplay that
snuck under •his pads tlirough a
screen when they were already
three goals behind.
Old • nemesis Chris Kennedy
scored twice as Exeter tallied
two times in the second, and
again in- the early minutes of
third period. Steve Mclnalty
connected for "the Grccn".will
10 minutes to go, spoiling the
shutout bid. ,
•
Although shot totals weren't
announced in this -Exeter
"neutral site" dorms game,
Seaforth had the edge, par-
ticularly in the final 15 minutes
when the Hawks were back on
their heels and Nahrgang held
the fort.
Goals have been rare as
sunny days cin the beach .for
the Cents lately, . who only
scored two of thein in Seaforth
Tuesday night so also lust 6-2
to the Thameslbrd 'Trojans, the
• team with the second -lest
record in thc J DL.
•That gams was 3-2 for the
Trojans until the "fat lady
sang" in the middle oI' the final
period, after they scored three
goals in 61 seconds, to skate
away with the points. Shaun
Angell scored a shorthanded
goal for Seaford' and Jason
Dunscith popped the other•on
the powerplay.

-- 'I he Stars are "sleepers" and
no slouches lately, and can still
cath Seaforth in third, They
hate picked up poiuts.in Abut
one game since the middle of
December, with seven wins,
duce ties•and two losses (one
in overtime) in that stretch.
They have also grasped the
upper hand against "Mitchell for
the fourth and final playoff
spot in the Moretti, now three
points ahead.
Seaforth is the sanae.distance-
behind the Irish but must finish
'w illi more points than Lucan to
finish second and get home ice
first round; because the first
point tic -breaker the - league
goes to is wins and Mc Irish
haw. three more and. both
teams only have five games
left.
If the other series is North
Middlesex and Exeter it should
prove interesting. The Stars -
have taken three of a possible
four points off the Hawks their
past two meetings, and have
played them "tooth and nail"
all season. .
Brandon Cord veau and Mark
Van Dooren both missed Sun-
day's gams: for Seaforth
because of injuries. ('orrivcau
won't he bark until the
playoffs. Don Rivers and Jason
Ilayier weren't in the lineup
1'MM other reasons. Top scorer
Shayne Robinson was a scatch
for Exeter.
FORCED HAND -
Iloth Seaforth goaltenders last
year appealed to the OHA for
their release before this season.
Nahrgang wanted. to go to
Exeter "to have fun" • and he
reunited with • friends from
Clinton and - sniper Nate Burns
who rounds with hint at the
lll,iversily of Wcstetii Ontario.
The OHA tribunal ruled after
the hearing -in Cambridge but
kept its decision to itself,
suspending announcement for a
week to give the Ccntcnaires
tilos to judge their goaltending
situation. Seaforth ended up
reluctantly releasing him for
$400 at the last minute in a
three-way deal in which Port
Stanley paid.
Despite an early -season in-
jury and the pounds he has put
.on since, the deal canie back to
haunt. Sunday. Nahrgang has
now beaten Seaford' twice and
remains an "acs in the hole", a
proven "pressure" goaltcndcr in
a back-up role to all-star Dar-
ren Kints. -
