Tech 21 takes shop class into future

Pneumatics, robotics, elec-
tronics, impact investigation.
•1t sounds like a university
science curriculum but it's
actually what used to be called
shop and home-
economics
class in public school.
Woodworking and food prep-
aration are still taught but now
other high-tech learning is
being introduced in full -clay
lab -type classes. Students from
the 24 different Huron County
public schools make six trips a
year to the Technology 21
Centre at Central Huron Sec-
ondary School (CRSS) in
Clinton. •
This is only the second year
the Tech 21 program has been
in place. With its introduction
in September 1994, four differ-
ent shop facilities at various
Huron public schools, including
Seaforth, were shut down.
"It took eight teachers to run
(the. old system). The hoard
looked at staffing and equip-.
meat costs and decided to close
down the other shops," says
Tech 21 teacher Richard
Maertens. Some oI' the equip-
ment from those classes was
sent to CHSS to create.lhe new
course room.
Four Program Modules
The Tech 21 Centre consists
of four areas which are divided
into modules where students
work for a half or full day. The
four areas arc: design, personal
care, communications and
manufacturing/control systems.
There is "no boys' side of the
room" or "girls' arca." Every-
one works together. Girls and
boys are teamed up at work
modules to complete projects.
In many ways it's a more
productive system since stu-
dents know they're only at
some modules for a half day in
the entire school year. They
have to complete a number of
"challenges" at each module
and when they're finished they
fill out a self-evaluation of
their work.
There is an instruction 1x>ok-
let at each module and all the
answersstudegts need arc
there, says Maertcns'He, along
with teachers Harry Brooks and
Maggie Crane designed and
lead'. the courses • Although
when you look around the Tcch
21 room, what you • see is
almost a "tcachcrl: ss" class
with students working on their
own.

Tech 21 Philosophy
As the Technology 21 philos-
ophy states: "The Centre is
based on the philosophy of co-
. -operative problem solving and
it is very important that stu-
dents come with an attitude of
co-operation. The nodules arc
designed to be completed with
minimal instruction from the
teat her."
In fact students are expected
to 'help each other and work

together to solve their prob-
lems. When a situation arises
and students have tried alterna-
tives, they may turn on the call
light located at each module
and a teacher will be there to
help out, according to the stu-
dent information package.
(•i ftecn-hundred Grade 7 and
K students from across Huron
come through the doors of the
Tech 21 Centre six times a
school year. Students must
complete two modules in each
of the four areas (and 12 in
total during the school year) so
they are exposed to a variety of
technologies. Students sign up
for the. modules at their home
school and know what they
will be doing when they arrive
at CHSS.
For students who have read-
ing problems, each of the
instruction _booklets have been
copied onto audio cassette.. A
student may choose to sign out
a tape player and headphones
to receive instruction on a
certain module, according to
Maertens.
Ile considers the Tcch 21
Centre a "work place" primar-
ily. "It's very different from
the previous format. Broad-
based technology is the key
word. We're not working on
skill:, we're working on expo -
sate to a variety of technol-
ogy"
