Craig Nicholson. All rights reserved.) This column is a little different. It's not about snow or sleds or trails. But I believe it's a story every snowmobiler should read. I hope you agree. For -years I've heard about Snowarama, but never really paid much attention. I mean, what could be more important than my own riding? Sure, I had some vague impression that Snowarama had something to do with kids. But so does MacDonald's. Not being a kid myself, it was no big deal. Until I met Casey. Casey is a bright teenager. He's about as determined and patent 0young man as I've ever met. He's had to be, because Casey was born with severe cerebral palsy. I haven't had anyone afflicted in my family. I can't imagine so insurmountable • a burden on so young a life. I can't begin to appreciate the daily struggle, the shattered hopes and dreams. I can only guess what Casey and his parents have gone through. I bet I'm not even close. Heck, I don't even know what cerebral palsy is. I guess that's why I'm uncomfortable around Casey. Kids are supposed to be fun -filled bundles of healthy energy and joy. -Normal - like I see on TV Casey doesn't fit my mental picture of happy childhood. But then Casey didn't have any choice in the matter, did he? Casey lives his young lite in a wheel chair. He hasn't been able to speak. Imagine the anguish of his parents, knowing that their son would never be able to talk; knowing too that there must be trapped thoughts cry' .0,M for expression, but lost for all time. Who knows what was going through Gssey's mind? Casey as 16 years old when his father came from work just like a thou other days. He was tired and pre-occ - it didn't register at first that a new voice had called out: "Hi Dad!' He stopped in shock and dis- belief, the weight of the world lifting off his shoulders. He heard those two profound words again: "Hi Dadl" and something deep inside him leapt with joy. Two small words ended Casey's eternal silence and marked a dream come true. Two magic words spoken because someone cared. ' Through the miracle of computer activated voice output, Casey will never be silent again. This new technology opened up an exciting and independent world for Casey. He is now enabled, not disabled. "Hi Dad!" has never had greater meaning. Casey can communicate because he had help from folks who cared. People who saw through his condition to the normal kid inside. People who were willing to stick it out with Casey and his family for all the long years it took to get out that first remarkable "Hi Dad!" People who never gave up. I don't think I have that kind of spirit, do you? Thank God Easter Seals folks do. It takes very special individuals to do this work. It takes very expensive equipment and facilities to change disabilities into abilities - one child at a time. It also takes money and that's where snowmobilers are helping. Through Snowarama, OFSC snowmobilers have raised over -$12 million for the Easter Seal Society of Ontario since 1975. With 75 scheduled rides this winter there's bound to be one near you. There's also bound to be a kid like Casey in your community. Maybe right in your own neighbourhood. Like me; you may be uncomfortable with him or her. Like me, you may not have what it takes to get personally involved. But you do have one big asset that every one of .these young fighters needs the ability to raise money. So the next time you see a Snowarama sign, please remember Casey. By donating a couple of hours of your snowmobiling time to ride in Snowarama'96, you can give a child like Casey years of untold possibilities. By bringing a buddy to ride with you, you can double these opportunities. And best of all, you don't have to miss any snowmobilingl ' Until next time, happy trails and remember to Ride Responsibly: Leave Tracks, Not Trash. Bring A Buddy to Snowarama.
