MARION McCLURE - Now clerk/treasurer in McKillop Township tortwo-and-a-half decades.
Clerk still challenged by job
•McKillop Township's
clerk/treasurer feels amal-
gamation is the biggest chal-
lenge facing - municipalities
right now.
"It is certainly not going to
cost less," Marion McClure
cautions, and .he should have a

McClure was recognized for
her two -and -half decades of
service by Reeve Ron -Murray-
at
Murrayat the township's .regular
meeting at .the start of this
month: She got a gold watch
and dinner certificate.
Times have changed. When
McClure started working. part-
time -for the township in
January -1971 she "learned as
went along" following Wilson
Little, who • himself had suc-
ceeded Jack . Eckert, clerk -
treasurer of the -township for
many moons. -
All -tax notices wcrc cal-
culated and written out by hard
then.
Now it's done by computer,
a -skill she picked up on her
own two years ago, with much
help she says from Pat Taylor
in Hibbert Township.
"It was a challcngc. I enjoyed
it. But it took Tots of over-
time," McClure says. -
She adds some. feel -learning

Fuel tender selected
Seaforth Council accepted the
low tender, from three sup-
pliers, for fuel in 1996-97
when it met Tuesday night.
It was from Dave Moore
Fuels for 24.40 cents per litre
for 13,0(X) litres of furnace oil
($3,172), and 28.7() cents per
litre for 10,(1)) litres of dyed
diesel ($2,870), both prices tr)

difficulty learning new tricks,
but the challcngc made her
more determined and she didn't
want 10 not try.
Municipal councils are in-
volved in more areas today
than they were in the early.
1970s, she says, for -instance
zoning.
McClure is working on hcr,
fourth reeve: Harvey Craig,
Allan Campbell, Marie flick- -
nell and now Reeve Murray.
"I've had good councils to
work for, even -when we don't
agree," she says, and good, - -
knowledgeable support staff
too, all of whom she took pains
to mention in particular.
Mrs. McClure's husband is
Ken. They have two daughters,
!.ori O'Connell of ,Mitchell and
Lisa McClure of Raliegh,
North Carolina, and one grand-
daughter, Lana.
The now long-time clerk/
treasurer says the thing she
likes best -about her job- is the
people.
"I think 1 almost know
everyone in the towrhship," she
says.
