"Not over with yet"
Officer tracks rabid skunk for hours
A recent problem with rabid
skunks in Scaforth is a "serious
situation" says animal control
officer Robert -Trick.
Ile reported to Tuesday's
council meeting on his first six
months on the job here, al-
though he has also held the
saiiue position for some time in
surrounding municipalities, for
instance his hometown -of Clin-
ton and Blyth.
Trick says skunks arc alt over
this town. He has had six calls
about the critters, live were
shot and rabies tests came back
positive for four.
"It is not -over with yet,'• he
said.
Trick told council -plc tracked
one of these rabid skunks, first
reported al the high school, a
long way for two' hours in
broad daylight and it visited- at
least 20houses, actually
• entered two dog houses and
• some garages before bcing
cornered for good Under a sun
- porch. .
The- animal control officer
says such erratic behavior is
typical for a sick skunk, rabid
or sometimes with distemper,
and 'is • dangerousbecause it
dramatically increases the odds
of it coming : into contact with
people or pets and infecting
them with the deadly virus by
bite or scratch.
• "They cover a big area, are
not looking for food and there
is no one place in Seaforth
Where they are all holing up,"
he says.

.Hospitals on
The Huron Perth District
Council plans to study hospital
and related health services in
the two counties and "develop
recommendations Co enhance
the effectiveness and efficiency
of the .district's health care
system."
Executive director: Fraser Bell
says the council will- be objec-
tive, and he doesn't know if it
will lead to closure. of one or
more 011 the eight hospitals in,
the district, who. have been

The animal control officer
added killing a den once you
find it can be tricky too,
because extermination without
removing the dead animals, for
instance, can cause problems
somewhere down the line by
attracting even. mote skunks
later.
Trick asked council to sup-
port his leiter to county council
about setting up a spring rabies
clinic in Seaforth, like the one
held every fall. Brussels, Blyth
and Clinton have one in the
• spring now.
He also noted Clinton won't
sell dog owners a registration
tag unless they piroducc proof
their animals have been vac-
cinated, suggesting Seaforth
might'consider the same.
200 TAGS SOLD
Trick says since he started as
animal control officer . 'in
Seaforth the town Inas sold 200
dog lags, compared to 208 last
year which is "pretty good for.
a new system." He reported he
-has picked up six dogs, one of
which was destroyed, and
followed other animals home
and warned their owners.
The animal control officer
said he received 38 complaints
until the start of the New Year
and two children were bitten by
dogs,which were subsequently
quarantined, in town.
Trick noted Clinton has just
passed a bylaw that pit bulls
• must be . muzzled when
walking, which Scaforth also
might want to consider, al-
though maybe not right now

Some experts also _say the magnetic fields generated by the
electric currents in such towers are linked.to increased incidence
of leukemia. Other, seemingly. equally valid experts, say they are
completcl?safe. -
The Beechwood residents say move. thc tower elsewhere,
somewhere where there -aren't 50 children growing upwithin-one-
and-a-half miles of the site that's already been staked.
"We all take great pride in our community and our heritage,"
the petition states. "'Mc farms are well _maintained and many are
being built up for the next generation.
• "We have worked long hours for many years to make this
community we call Beechwood a beautiful place to live. We have
cleaned up ditch hanks, painted our buildings and. planted trees.
Never did anyone of us ask for an unsightly, huge tower looming -
over us."
Bell Mobility rents -the land for such towers, and pays a good
fee. But they also say they "consider coinmunity interests...but
have failed to contact anyone in our neighborhood", say those in
Beechwood who have signed the petition.
Towers must be licensed by the federal government, through a
labyrinth of, various departments and agencies, including the .
CRTC.
No one .is sure if a Beechwood tower has yet been okayed.
