It can infect wild animals, pets and humans and is always fatal once symptoms appear, according to a recent news release from the Huron County Health Unit. Rabies is spread from an infected animal to another animal or person by saliva. This could happen through: • biting • contact with a cut, sore or an open would • contact with mucous membranes (mouth, eyes, nasal cavity). Rabies moves from its entry point to the central nervous system by multiplying inside nerve cells. Once rabies reaches the brain, it multiplies rapidly. Damage•caused to the brain by the virus brings on the clinical signs of the disease. The virus then moves out to the salivary glands and other parts of the body. Damage to the brain causes the visible symptoms or rabies. These include: • depression • partial paralysis, and • aggressive behaviour Skunks, who are nocturnal, may lose their fear of humans and come out during the day time. It is important that you take rabies precautions. These include: • avoiding stray and wild animals, and advising children to do the same; • making sure you animal - proof your home and property; • ensuring your cat or dog doesn't roam in the evenings; and • that your cat or dog wears , .'an identification collar, or is somehow otherwisc.able to be identified. • It is mandatory- that cats and dogs in Huron County be vaccinated against rabies, or owner may face a fine. If you are scratched or bitten by a wild or . stray -animal, immediately .wash the wound with soap and water and contact your doctor 'or your local health department. It is important that you seek medical attention. Here are some tips on how to skunk -proof your home and garden. These often unwanted guests find food in our -lawns .and garbage and shelter under sheds and porches and refuse piles..Thc number of skunks in any area depends on how much food and shelter. is available. To remove a skunk without also removing the fesd and eliminating the shelter just leaves a home for another skunk to move into. Skunks arc usually attracted to (awns and gardens after a . rainfall when grubs and larvae are near the surface. They dig small .round holes, and in some cases, actually roll ' up chunks- of sod. erevention methods include: • treating the lawn with insecticides to get rid of the - grubs and larvae; and/or • sprinkling pure soap flakes •on the lawn - and water thoroughly. Garbage cans, pct food and _bird seed provides a real feast . • for skunks. Once a free meal is found, the -skunk will return again and again. Since skunks are poor climbers, you can close down this wildlife cafe by: . • storing garbage in bins or boxes; • fitting garbage cans with tight lids and secure them upright. If lid docs not fit tightly, weight it down with a rock or cement block. A bungee cord ticd over the lid from side handle to side • handle is also effective; • • placing pct and bird seed out of their reach; • placing oil of mustard or 'moth balls in the bottom ,of the garbage can as - a repellent;- • storing garbage inside the , garage or basement until the morning of pick-up. Future of Huron schools under review BY AMY NSILA_ ND_S SSP News Staff . The 'future of certain Huron County schools has come under • review by the Huron . County Board of Education as they have started to look at how the system uses its 29 school buildings. - "We. have conic to the end of a rather luxurious twricxl where we have'not had lo deal with/ these sons of issues," said Paul Carrollat a recent special meeting` of the board. He added, however, that no dcci- sions of schoo closures have been made but "f have no doubt we are going -to be. forced to make a decision about the number of buildings we operate." The Management Committee presented •a report on the pro- jected occupancy • for the year 2000 of the board's elementary schools. Schools with a pro- jected occupancy of less than 60 per cent of the Ministry of Education recognized maxi- -mum capacity will be reviewed for other possible uses of the schools. In a /notion passed by the board, the principals of East WawandSh, Grey, McCurdy, Usborne, Victoria, Walton, Vanastra, Central Huron. and Seaforth District High School will establish a committee to "investigate possible future uses of these schools." We must fnakc no assump- tions at this time, said Carroll of trustees's questions of clo- sure of the schools. He added that alternatives will be looked at such as renting out areas .of the schools unused by its stu- dents and staff. "We have a window of opportunity -lo be creative," he said. With its occupancy Icvcl at the lowest of all board schools, the future and existence of Vanastra Community School came undcr question as the tender for phase four of reno- vations of the school was deferred for 6() days until the February board meeting. "We've made great headway attacking the situation at Vanastra," said Allan Carter, vice chair of the board and trustee for Tuckcrsinith and Hensall. He added that the school is shared with the OPP, seniors groups, community groups and adult education. "1 r believe we as a board have a commitment to Vanastra." But the 5125,000phase, which would sec the renovation of the front entrance of the school, • caused concern amongst several trustees as they felt this. money would the better used in the classroom. "it's just an .entrant way," said Trustee Della. Baumgarten. "I fuel the money could be better spent somewhere else like in science labs or in the libraries; somewhere more important than a front door." "A lot can be accomplished in that time," said Trustee Bea Dawson of the 60 day delay. She added that this would' give the community plenty of time to respond and give ideas on other ways the school building could be used. THE HURON EXPOSITOR.
