Cents rock in New Year with romp
The Seaforth Centenaires
rocked in the New Year with a
10-2 romp over the Hagarsville
Hawks Sunday afternoon at the
Seaforth and District Com-
munity Centres, leaving them
in third place of the rollicking
Morenz Division of the Ontario
Hockey Association's Junior
"D"evelopment League, two
poin!`s behind but with a game
in hand on the second -place
Lucan Irish 6 who they tangle
with two times this week.
It capped a busy and
frustrating Christmas span in
which the local junior hockey
team pulled in healthy holiday
crowds but twice -lost in the
fleeting final seconds of enter-
taining defensive battles, but on
the other hand also recorded
their first shutout in two
seasons and managed to pick
up five of a possible eight
points in four games in 10
days.
Friday the North Middlesex
Stars, fresh from upsetting
Exeter the weekend before and
looking like anything but a
last -place team, scored the
winner on a powerplay with a
scant six seconds left in
regulation time at Scaforth to
edge the Centenaires 3-2. Two
nights before at Mitchell began
the bad flashback that unfolded
as it shouldn't, following al-
most the exact same script,
except the hometown Hawks
won 5-4 and scored the winner
on a powerplay with just 10
seconds remaining in overtime,
which at least earned the Cents
a point for the standings.
The previous Friday night on
home ice, goaltcnder Scott
Wood administered the goose
egg as an early Christmas
present to those same Hawks,
as Seaforth broke a scoreless
deadlock after two periods and
skated to a 4-0 win.
The midget -aged local goalie
got the starting call for all four

responded with some stellar
puck -stopping, pushing his
personal goals against average
to just under 3.00, second best
in the division, which should
earn him a berth in the con-
ference lineup for the annual
league all-star game at Lucan
later this month.
Despite a troublesome four
losses and one tic in five over-
times so far this season, the
Ceutenaires now have a respec-
table winning percentage of
.635 entering their crunch run,
a final six or so weeks of the
regular schedule in which they
play a dozen games, seven on
the road and five at home.
First -place Exeter is almost
too far in front of the five -team
pack, nine points in front of
Scaforth with games in hand,
to realistically catch.
Second place in the Morenz
may swfiig on the- borne -and -
home series between the two
closest contenders, Lucan and
thc Cents, this week.
The Centenaires host Delhi
Friday night at 8:30, then the
Irish Sunday afternoon at 2:30.
They travel to Lucan next
Wednesday night for an 8:15
start.
Teams must battle it out in
their own divisions, then con-
ference, to advance in this
year's playoffs which begin the
third week of February.
C4TH 10 HAGARSVILLE 2
The Cents went on a share -
the -wealth scoring rampage
without three regular front-line
forwards in the lineup (Steve
Mclnally, Jason Henderson -and
Don Rivers), all sitting out
with shoulder injuries.
Nine shooters scored the 10
goals, five on the powerplay.
Mark VanDooren scored twice
for Seaforth and Tim Barton,
Jason Dunseith, Jeff Volland,
Scott Wright, Brandon Cor-
riveau, Shaun Anstett, Jason
Hayter and Brent Hulley did
the rest of the damage, as
Scaforth jumped to a 3-0 lead
after the first period and made
it 5-1 after two in front of
about 140 fans, out -shooting
the visitors 45-29.
STARS 3 CENTS 2
Ben Syer brought a tear to
the eye and curse to the lips of
many fans in the home crowd
of about 150 when he scored
the winner with but a half-
dozen ticks left on the tock.
• The two teams stood at 1-1
after the first period, with
Corriveau scoring on ' a
breakaway for Seaforth, and
the score stayed that way after
two.
Mclnally gave the Cents the
lead with a little more than
seven minutes gone in the final
period, but the veteran North
Middlesex club equalized on a
powerplay with slightly more
than five minutes left.
The Stars out -shot Seaforth
32-27.
HAWKS 5 CENTS 4 (OT)
Rob Lewis scored the winner
with 10 tocks left to tick in
overtime, with Seaforth once
again occupying the penalty
box. The Centenaires felt the
winning play was offside, but
referee Ray McManus would
hear none of it, as Seaforth
continued to struggle in OT.
Jeff Lewis completed a hat
trick to send the game into
extra time with less than two
minutes to go in the third
period.
Hulley also had a hat trick
for the Cents, whose other goal
was scored by Volland.
CENTS 4 HAWKS 0
Wood was full measure for
the shut out, the first for the
Cents since league first -team
all-star Dana Duskocy notched
four during the 93-94 regular
season, as Jeff Flanagan, Van-
Dooren, McInally and Rivers
scored four unanswered goals
in final 20 minutes to end the
scoreless "sister -kisser" in front
of a pre -Christmas crowd of
slightly more than 200 fans in
Seaforth.

HANGING IN THERE - The Seaforth Centenaires still have a pretty good shot at second place following four games in 10
days over the Christmas holidays. Cents' defenceman Terry Barton (27) chases Mitchell's Craig Eidt in this photo taken
last Wednesday night at Mitchell, where the Seaforth juniors dropped an overtime decision. Seaforth goaltender Scott Wood,
playing well enough lately to earn a berth in the upcoming league all-star game, is in the background.

NOTHING HAPPENED?
Because Monday was a statutory
holiday the deadline for this
edition was late last week, before
many holiday week tournaments
(Silver Stick, etc.) were completed.
We will endeavour to include
these results in next week's
SCOREBOARD.
Teams should also start thinking
about arranging to have their
tures taken for our annual Winter
Sports Edition which comes out
later this year. Why leave it until
the last minute and end up with a
lousy picture that nobody likes,
with half the team maybe not
there? To schedule a winter sports
tears picture for our photographer
please call Gregor or Dave at 527-
0240.
Any team that plays any winter
sport in Seaforth is eligible to get
its picture in That popular special
edition.

Mac's return short-lived
Dave McLlwain return to the -
big leagues was short-lived last
month.
The eight-year National
Hockey League veteran of six
teams who was loaned to the
IHL's Cleveland Lumberjacks
after training camp last fall was
called up to Ottawa for what
turned out to be one game, a 2-
1 loss in which he recorded an
assist on the woeful Senators'
lone goal.
Ottawa's general manager
Randy Sexton was fired that
weekend, and one of the first
moves of new Ottawa manager
Pierre Gauthier was to deter-
mine the Senators had too
many bodies.
So it was back to the Lum-
berjacks for Dave, who remains
one of the top scorers in that
league.
McLlwain has been selected
to play for the Eastern Con-
ference at the IHL all-star
game at Houston on Jan. 13.
Watt earns two assists
Mike Watt of Egmondville
has earned two assists helping
Team Canada to a perfect 4-0
record so far at the World
Junior Hockey Championships
in the Boston arca.
Canada plays Russia this
• afternoon at 3:30 in the tour-
nament semi-finals. Sweden
takes on the Czech Republic in
today's other semi-final. •
A win today would put the
three -time defending world
champions who wear the big
red maple leaf in tomorrow's
(Thursday) final scheduled for
7:30 p.m. •
Watt, 19 and a sophomore
for the Michigan State Univer-
sity Spartans, assisted on what
proved to be the winning goal
of Canada's important
preliminary round win against
Finland, and assisted on
another in Canada's 8-1
slaughter of thc depleted Uk-
rainian junior squad in
Canada's last start Sunday.
Equipment swiped
A player on thc Scaforth
midgets had his hockey equip-
ment swiped at a tournament in
Stratford Iasi week.
Police say the gear was
valued at about $1,1(X) and was
stolen from Michael Murray.
Among other items he lost
two •crestal Scaforth minor
hockey sweaters, bearing thc
number 17.
The Canadians arc fighting
the flu bug this week, but
because of their perfect record
in the preliminaries got a byc
through Monday's quarter-
finals.
