Seaforth native works at bomb site

Seaforth Community Hospital
posted a plaque last week in
appreciation of the mini mara-
thon by Expositor editor Tim
Cumming which earned more
than $4,000 in donations and
pledges for the hospital.
MAY 10
A Seaforth native was one of
the only Canadians working as
a nursing volunteer at the fed-
eral building in Oklahoma, the
site of the recent bombing
tragedy.
Linda Matthews, the daughter
of Gord and Marion
MacDonald who live on
Goderich St. East in Seaforth,
is now a nurse in the emerg-
ency department of Woodstock
General Hospital.
The Seaforth Centenaires
hope a winning combination
from a decade ago can light a
fire under the local junior
hockey team in its 22nd sea-
son.
The executive named Dave
Murray and Jim Campbell as
head coaches of the
Centenaires last week. Dave
Akey . was appointed assistant
coach.
MAY 17
Seaforth's Police Department
has been asked by the police
services board to return all
police boots when the munici-
pal force is disbanded this fall.
The issue came up after the
police department ordered four
new pairs of police boots.
Seaforth Council expressed
concern the public education
system isn't tightening its belt
like everybody else, before
passing the bylaw to collect
1995 mill rates. The combined
mill rat for the Huron County
Board of Education has
increased 9.6 per cent, whereas
the combined mill rate for the
Huron -Perth Roman Catholic
Separate School Board has
increased two per cent.

Seaforth sped to a personal
best and missed cracking the 2 -
minute barrier by a whisker
while winning the junior boys
metric half -mile at last week's
WOSSA track and field meet
in London. Carly Price won in
junior girls 80 -metre hurdles
and Lori Pcrric won senior
girls discus.

Tuckersmith Township Coun-
cil approved the bylaw Nanning
any future strip clubs in the
township. The bylaw would
also prevent the current strip
club, Tops, from re -opening as
a strip club if it closes for a
period of two years.
JUNE 7
Seaforth Community Hospital
will spend an estimated
$222,000 to upgrade its capital
equipment in the 1995-96 fiscal
year.

A McKillop Township native,
Cpl. John Ryan, left last week
for a six-month tour of duty
with the United Nations
peacekeeping force in Croatia.
John is a member of the air
force's 742 communications
squadron and is the son of Ron
and Mary Ryan of St.
Columban.
JUNE 14
The final count was different
and closer in Seaforth and
immediate area than it was
elsewhere in Huron County in
last Thursday's provincial
election. The end result was a
win for the Progressive Conser-
vative Party and candidate
Helen Johns carrying the Tory
banner of Blue.

Seaforth Police Chief Hal
Claus returned home Sunday
after triple -bypass heart surgery
at London's University Hospi-
tal. He says he was heartened
by the many cards and visits he
has received from local well-
wishers.
Scaforth's Boyd Devereaux
scored his first goal in junior
hockey at Parkhill un a tip -in
as a 14 -year-old in October
1992.
Sixty or so junior goals later
he made it to centre stage at
the famed Maple Leafs Gar-
dens in Toronto Saturday
where he was the first 17 -year-
old selected, and fifth pick
overall in the first round, in the
annual Junior A Ontario
Hockey League draft.
JUNE 21
Last week's temporary Main
St. detour allowed workmen to
start improving the railroad
crossing. The new base gravel
will be left under the rails for a
month, until July 10, allowing
the ground to settle for
repaving.

The board that oversees the
Seaforth Police Force has
asked the OPP for a sergeant to
serve as acting -chief, hopefully
by the start of July.
Seaforth Chief Hal Claus is
recovering from recent heart
surgery and current acting -
chief, Const. Charlie Akey, told
the Seaforth Police Services
Board "the cost of doing noth-
ing is serious."
Dr. Ed Malkus was presented
with an award of recognition
by Seaforth Community Hospi-
tal Bdard of Director's Chair
Marlen Vincent for more than
40 years of service at the hos-
pital. An open house will hon-
our Doctor Malkus on June 21.
JUNE 28
The search for a missing 16 -
year -old Goderich girl con-
tinues. Mistie Nichole Murray
was reported missing June 2.
She is the daughter of Steve
and Anne Murray, formerly of
St. Columban. Provincial police
at Goderich report there is no
indication of foul play and the
case is classified as a "missing
person."

School's out for this summer
but St. Anne's Catholic Sec-
ondary School will be ready
for students when it is again
time to break out the books
next September.
Principal Ray Commis says
construction is "on target," all
staff has been hired and should
report for work at the new
school on the east edge of
Clinton August 15.
