UCTRA restructures
The Chair of the Upper
Thames River Conservation
Authority says "soft services"
and some jobs are gone, unless
its member municipalities help
shoulder the financial burden
caused by provincial cutbacks.
Grant Hopei -oft said these
services include water control,
reforestation and maintenance.
"Our best -case scenario right
now is six people will lose
their jobs," he said. "The
worst-case scenario is 16 jobs
will have to go."
UCTRA general manager
Don Pearson says the aftermath
of the Ontario government's
budget -balancing moves is that
the arca conservation authority
will receive about $600,(XX) in
1996 and perhaps half that two
years down the road, a lot less
than the $1.2 -million it got this
year.
Mitchell, St., Marys and Hib-
bert Township are three of the
26 municipalities that are mem-
bers of UCTRA.
Amalgamation poll
Some residents of Middlesex
will be polled to determine
support for a proposed single -
tier government, that would
replace almost all municipal
boundaries in the county with
wards.
The structure is an option
Middlesex is considering. to
recoup almost 30 per cent of
its tax base lost when London
annexed 64,000 acres in 1993.
The county now has 21
towns, townships and villages
with a population of about
61,000.
Council voted 22-5 in favour
of the telephone poll of 400
residents, at an estimated cost
of from $7,000 to $9,000.
Monarchists pleased
Oaths of allegiance to the
Queen will once again be
sworn by new police officers in
this province.
Ontario Solicitor -General Bob
Runciman says the Police
Services Act will be amended
to restore the reference the
"Her Majesty the Queen",
deleted by the previous NDP
govcrnmcnt.
He told the legislature "a-
llegiance to the monarchy of
Canada is one of the hallmarks
of our society."
CHRISTMAS POEM
One lonely Christmas Eve I
woke to a clatter.
I looked out the window and
saw a bad matter.
Old Saint Nick had fallen off
the roof.
And landed on the ground
with a poof.
['went outside and put on his
suit.
And then I got in his sleigh
and let out a hoot.
The reindeer took off and I
fell out.
'Aad ., Chaistaiasi,,,waa..it14►er
without a doubt '
But right there and then Santa
got up.
He got in his sleigh and let
out a shout.
Then he took off in his
sleigh.
And Christmas was on for the
next day.

THE NIGHT WHEN
RUDOLPH WOULDN'T
FLY
One Christmas night when
Santa was ready to leave
Rudolph tried to fly but he
couldn't fly. So Rudolph tried
again but he still couldn't fly.
So Santa said to Rudolph,
'Sorry next time you can
come but this year you can't
So Rudolph just sat in the
cold snow. Then he said just
before Santa left, 'Santa,
could I try again?' Then
Santa said, 'sure'. "Thanks,'
said Rudolph. Then he tried
and he flew, and Santa was
happy. So was Rudolph.

THE SCARE ON
CHRISTMAS EVE
My family and I went to
bed at 8:00 pm and then
around 9:00 or 10:00 pm I
woke up. I heard a noise so I
went out to our living room
and nothing was there. So I
went back to bed and I heard
the noise again. I looked out
the window and there was a
big reindeer looking at me. I
ran and hid under my bed and
the next morning my family
and I woke up and went out
to our living room. There
were presents everywhere.
There were so many that we
couldn't see the Christmas
tree and then I remembered
last night and then 1 knew
why Santa's reindeer was so
enormous!

POOR SANTA CLAUSE
One Christmas all the
children were waiting for
Santa Clause to come to their
house. They all went to sleep
because their parents told
them that Santa wouldn't
come if they were awake.
The next morning was
Chrisunas. There were no
presents under the tree. They
didn't know where Santa was.
He didn't bring any presents
for them. So they went to
sleep. Santa was sick in the
hospital and couldn't bring
them any presents. When the
kids found out they went to
the hospital to see Santa
Clause and had Christmas
there.

Dear Santa Claus,
Hi Santa, how are you? 1
would like some presents for
Christmas. I want new
S. Claws a biker?
You probably don't believe
in Santa Claus or should I say
Santa Claws, I do. I saw him
last year. He wears a long,
red motorcycle jacket with
the 'skulls' symbol on it. , He
also wears a black and green
bandana on his head.
I saw him take off leather
gloves and long, curly
fingernails sprong out. Then
he sat in our lazy -boy chair to
take off his boots and to
snack on the chocolate chip
cookies 1 left him by the
fireplace. When 1 noticed he
had long, curly toenails too.
He then turned around. I
tried to move but I froze. He
put on his big leather gloves
and small cowboy boots. He
started coming towards me. I
closed my eyes. Then I felt a
hand touch my shoulder. I
heard a voice say, 'Julie,
what are you doing up? It's
way past bedtime!' I opened
my eyes. There standing in
front of me was iny father.
'Did you sec him, dad?' 1
asked. 'Set who?' he replied.
I started walking towards
the door. Dad followed mc. I
walked out with my bunny
Nippers on when I heared
someone yelling, 'Merry
Christmas to all and to all a
good night!' I then turned to
the couch and 1 fell asleep.
'Wake up everybody! It's
Christmas. !remembered my
brother yelling. 'Santa Claus
came!' He said a minute
later. I told him it wasn't
Santa Claus, it was Santa
Claws. If you want to get
something for Santa, you
should give him some toenail
or fmgemail clippers.

Dear Santa,
How are you Santa? Thank
you for the nice presents last
year. How is Mrs. Claus and
the reindeer? I've been a
good boy! Please don't bring
me any candy canes. I don t
like them. For Christmas I
would like a Barbie that can
skate on real ice and go in
real snow. I also want a box
of mini -motors and the puzzle
which is a road. These are
from Discovery Toys. I
would also like smelly
markers. Merry Christmas

Cool candy cane !
I was writing my Christmas
letter when I thought of cool
it would be if I could have a
giant candy cane 10 feet high
and 3 feet wide. It would last
me a year then I could have
another one next year. I wrote
it down lightly on the bottom
of my page. I •was golns to
erase it but when I put it m a
evaelope and sent it away I
forgot to erase it. Whoops, I
know Santa won't bring it
any way.
3 WEEKS LATER
Oh, my it's Christmas Eve.
One more night and it's the
big day. I had put all my
presents for my mom, dad,
and brothers under the tree. I
made sure I put out some
milk and cookies. Oh, I
almost forgot I'm going to
write a letter to tell Santa not
to bring me the candy cane.
Then I went to bed.
THE NEXT DAY
I woke up late for some
reason. When I got down
stairs everyone was waiting
for me. We all opened
presents. I got a pair of
earrings but where did they
go? 1 looked under the ouch
and to my surprise there was
a giant candy cane. Was I
every surprise! And guess
what? That candy cane lasted
me a year.
P.S. I did find those
earrings.
