The were taken down a notch in the Ontario Hockey As- sociation Junior "D"evelopment League standings by back-to- back losses to the Exeter Hawks then Tavistock Braves on the weekend, 4-2 and 6-3. Sitting now in third place they face a home -and -home holiday series with the team breathing down their neck in the Morem. Division standings, none other than their biggest rival, the Mitchell Hawks, right now the second hottest team in the enure 18 -team league. Those Hawks started slow but now have two fewer losses and are only five points back of Seaforth, with three games in hand, and in the last six CENTS 3 BRAVES 6 First Period 1. They also t<ave a bit of a bee in their bonnet, about having had a six -game winning streak snapped against the unbeaten other Hawks in their last start at Exeter Sunday night, with an overtime loss, for which they nevertheless carded a point in a game they led 3-1 midway through the first period. The Centenaires host the Hawks Friday night at 8:30, then return the favour at Mitchell the day after Boxing Day, Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the now annual Christmas doubleheader between the two traditional hockey foes. The Centenaires handled Mitchell quite handily at Monkton just past the middle of Novenit t, but could only manage a 2-2 ue on home ice in Seaforth about week later, in the only games they have played so far this season. If the Cents play like they did Saturday night at Tavistock they will get smoked. They were "lackluster", to say the least, in a 6-3 loss to the Braves, who climbed out of the basement in the far weaker Bauer Division with the win. Boonstra in the Tavis- tock net faced 49 shuts. Mike Stephenson, Chris Lyndon, then Stephenson again faced 33 at the Seaforth end. Steve Mclnally had a three- point night with two goals and an assist, and Brent Hulley got the other goal for the Cen- tenaires, The Cents led 3-2 until the Braves scored twice on the powerplay just past the midway point of the second period, added another four minutes later, and were off to the races. It was the Centenaires final visit to the old Tavistock ban, where pucks often soar through criss-crossed wooden beams and with its unique three -row players' benches and dressing rooms so small the Cents had to dress in shifts one game this pre -season, which is scheduled to be torn down. If the Braves advance in this year's playoffs they will have to play home games somewhere else if construction of the town's new arena is to get underway on schedule. Friday night at Seaforth was a far better hockey game, in front of 330 fans, the largest crowd of the season. The Exeter Hawks won but the Cents played well. Captain Jason McBride's insurance goal trickled an inch or so over the line. past Scott Wood with a little tore than live minutes remaining and kept Exeter's unbeaten run alive at 18 games. The first period was scoreless and the second ended 1-1, with J.C. Kirk putting a rebound upstairs in the mesh on former Ccntenaire Dave Nahrgang for the Scaforth goal. Clinton's Nate Burns, veteran league scoring leader Shayne Robinson and McBride scored for the Hawks in the third, with Terry Barton replying for Seaforth.
