Under the new rules, some
trout lakes will be closed for
fishing during the winter and
early spring, and others will be

Self-esteem has less to do with school success
A student's self-esteem has
less to do with success in
school than educators common-
ly think.
"The most powerful factors
for predicting academic success
are intellectual effectiveness
and academic effort," says
University of Guelph family
studies professor Bruce Ryan,
commenting on his study
released last week, funded by
the Hospital for Sick
Children's Foundation and
based on data from the Wel-
lington County Roman Catholic
Separate School Board.
"When child and family
variables were examined in
combination the significant
direct relationship between
self-esteem and achievement
disappeared," Ryan says.
The study found self-esteem
doesn't independently affect a
child's achievement when the
full context of the child s
development is considered.
"In fact, in study after study
that looked at the effects on
behaviors such as acting out,
internalizing problems, peer
sociability and rule compliance,
self-esteem .was found to be
irrelevant," Ryan adds.
The study also found children
who received the most help
with schoolwork from parents
got the poorest grades, even
when intellectual effectiveness
and academic effort were taken
into account.
"Children who arc trying
hard and get parental help
don't do as well'as those who
don't get parental help," says
Ryan.
The three-year study involved
data from 250 children in
Grades 4, 7 and 11, as well as
from teachers and fancily mem
bers.
It found children from com-
petitive families had lower self-
esteem than those from
cohesive families.
The research data indicates
mothers and fathers influence
their child's development in
significantly• different ways,
according to the study.
"Mothers offer more support
than fathers to children who
arc not intellectually effective,
but mothers will reduce and
fathers will increase pressure
on children who are trying
hard," Ryan says.
Bluewater to be 'normalized'
The Huron County high
school near Goderich tied into
the correctional centre is trying
to "promote normalization",
according to an information
bulletin from the director of the
Huron County Board of
Education.
Bluewater Secondary School
has initiated a student council.
