Godench • Goderich council trimmed costs and added fees to reduce its $2.6 -million budget by $86,000 last month in an- ticipation of the recent downsizing austerity announ- cements by the Ontario govcmment. Coun. Maurice Jenkins warned pending provincial cuts might change the face of Goderich. An administrative committee of council has recommended others in the community might now organize parades and events such as the arts and One in four men live in poverty Morc than one in four men who retire early Iivc below the poverty Zinc, with single men faring the worst, according to a Statistics Canada report last week. In 1993, the latest year for which data is available, there were 348,(X)() men in Canada aged 55-64 who retired early, 9,000 of whom had no income and were excluded from the study. Of the remaining 339,000 there wcrc 68,000 who were single, more than half of whom - 56 per ccnt - fell below Siail's low-income cutoff. The median annual income for all the retirees was'$17,300. council cuts budget others is a dream." Council agreed to table the recommendation for three months to give the ad- ministrator time to search for new organizers. The administrative committee has also recommended Goderich council reduce in size, from nine members to seven. crafts, marine heritage and lights festivals. Jenkins says if council were to get out of such activities it would take away from the very being of the town. "These activities that are mentioned are part and parcel of living in Goderich," the councillor said. "To have them organized by Oxford wants to slice muncipalities from eight to two An Oxford councillor has proposed slicing the number of municipalities in that nearby county from eight to two, Woodstock and Tillsunburg/ Ingersoll, to reduce ..osis and avoid huge property tax increases. "It's a hard sell for people who have lived with the present system," Coun. Dave Nadalin says. "I would love to stay with the status -quo but the cutbacks are going to Ix' drastic and we have to be creative. "We have to be proactive. We don't want to ju•t %.ait for something to be imposed on us." Parents owe welfare system Parents who won't make - child support payments now owe Ontario's welfare system 5317 -million, almost double the amount owed three years ago when arrears wcrc $166 -mil- lion. In part because of the increased number of family breakdowns, the number of support cases in. this province has risen to 141,303 from 93,479 during the same period. Since 1992 the percentage of people complying with child support orders rose l0 23 per cent from 18 per cent. Provincial govcmment figures show payments arc now in arrears to about 35,000 welfare parents.
