Women -only
non-smoking
groups to be held
Women -only stop -smoking
groups arc going to he held in
Seaforth and other Huron
County municipalities in the
new year.
"The reasons women smoke
tend to differ from inen," ac-
cording to a press release from
the Huron County Action
Group on Women and
Smoking.
Peer support is more impor-
tant for women than Hien who
are trying to quit, and "research
has shown that women in
mixed groups are olden reluc-
tant to participate or share their
experiences," adds co-ordinator
Ruth Cooper in a press release
from the Huron County Health
Unit about the program funded
by the federal government but
administered by various arca
women's agencies and the
health unit.
Young women between the
ages of 20 and 24 make up the
largest group of smokers.
Sonic other statistics are
startling. Women's •College
Hospital in foronto says
women under 50 who smoke
25 or more cigarettes a day
have a seven -fold increase in
the risk for heart attack.
Women also do not appear to
be kicking the habit as fast as
men. In 1966, 54 per cent of
Canadian men and 32 per cent
of women smoked. In 1991, 26
per cent of both sexes smoked.
Cooper says transportation
and child care will he provided
for women who otherwise
might not be able to attend.
Health Canada is contributing
a total of $44,100 over Iwo
years as part of a strategy
announced last February to
reduce tobacco demand, paid
for by a surtax, on the profits of
tobacco manufacturers.
The first groups are
scheduled for Gtxlcrich and
Exeter, with others to follow
later next year in Seaforth,
Wingham and Clinton. For
more information call 482-3416
or 1-800-265-5184 for long-
distance calls only,
wishing to go on exchanges
to fill out the preliminary
application forms. Successful
applicants between 14 and 17
years of age arc matched with
a student of similar age and
interests. They will spend
three months in each other's
homes and schools.
For exchanges with France
and Switzerland, students
must be studying French as a
second language; for
Germany, Italy, Japan,
Mexico and Spain, students
must acquire some basic
competence in the language
before departure. The aims of
the exchange program are: to
enhance language proficiency;
to increase awareness of other
cultures; to promote personal
growth and development; and
to foster global awareness.
