Shop class goes beyond theory

A high school shop class is
learning more than just theory.
Students learning how to sell
the products they produce.
Jim Muir's Grade 10-12
manufacturing technology class
at SDHS has created its own
company - TMJ Design Crates.
The class is busy working on
crates to hold cassette, CD and
VHS tapes. The finished prod-
ucts will be sold at the Toy
Show in Seaforth on Dec. 2
and 3. Teaching ' assistant
Wendy Case is also helping to
oversee production.
The class recently set up an
assembly -line to construct the
pine containers.
The same class has built two
cabinets for pamphlet storage
for Seaforth's town hall.
They've also completed four
large storage boxes for
Robertson Public School in
Goderich.
"Kids have to sec something
that's realistic. It's better than
me teaching them all the theory
in the world," said Muir.
Students started from just a
basic design and progressed
from there.
"I fed them enough informa-
tion for them to start. They
made three or four prototypes
of each crate first. They didn't
like that I was the quality
control man. I sent them back
to change a few things," says
Muir.
The containers the class is
building coo not necessarily
have to be used to hold tapes,
says the shop teacher. "They
can be used in the kitchen for
sugar, spices or a flower
holder. They're diverse. I'm
quite happy with the way it
evolved."

CLASS LOGO - Students
designed a logo for their
shop class and will wear
t -shirts with it displayed
during the toy show.
The class voted on what
items would sell the best and
the tape crates were chosen. ,
They are for sale at the
school's tuck shop.
A building construction class
recently built a replica of
Seaforth's Round House. It was
a project commissioned by the
Agricultural Society and will
be featured in the Santa Claus
parade. Four students did all of
the work. They tied math to
technology when they figured
out the angle of the roof (with
some help from their math
teacher), said Muir. The mini
Round House has over $500
worth of materials in it.
These large projects provide
something for students to work
at without having to spend a lot
of money on a personal project
since material costs come out
of students' pocket.
Any profits from the sales at
the toy show will go back into
the course and to 't pizza day
for students after the snow.
The class has designed its
own TMJ logo and will wear t -
shirts displaying it during the
sale. ••
