County will
spend more yet
on landfill
Continued from page 1
Goderich Township, said
Stephen Township is not keen
on the idea He said the presen-
tation by Veilleux to county
councillors "had a lot of holes
in it."
"It would be no problem if
Bluewater just wanted to serve
Huron County (with its new
program and proposed facility)
but they've taken out a permit
for four million people.
They're talking about taking
the responsibility of waste
management over," said Cox.
There were comments from
board members that Huron
County has spent three-quarters
of a million dollars already on
studies for a county site. A
report will be out in December
on whether the candidate site in
Ashfield meets hydrological
requirements. Board members
also commented that the county
will have to spend a lot to get
through the Environmental
Assessment.
Ron McKay, Deputy Reeve
of Clinton, had concerns about
the future of the Mid -Huron
site.
"What if Clinton decided to
contract with Bluewater. What
effect would that have here?
What if six municipalities do
it?," asked McKay.
"Tipping fees would go up,"
said McCabe.
"If no one uses this one then
what?," asked McKay.
"We're all right if the county
says the existing Landfill has to
be used first (before other sites
are started)," answered
McCabe. `Theoretically, we
could apply for a transfer site
here," he said.
McCabe asked office man-
ager Ben Munnings what per-
centage of waste coming to the
site is considered "curbside" or
"construction." Munnings said
about half would be considered
curbside garbage and about 15
per cent would be construction
- shingles, drywall, etc.
The board agreed to invite
Veilleux to its next meeting to
discuss issues raised and to
answer the board's questions.

JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS - Randy and Shirley Brooker of Seaforth recently opened
a toy store on Main Street near the traffic lights. The say it is a risk and they are new to
retailing, but the business is an expression of their philosophy - that children learn through
play.

A Seaforth couple opened a
new toy store on Main Street at
the start of November.
Owners Randy and Shirley
Brooker say it expresses one of
their philosophies - learning
through play.
The business is named Family
Express, and is located close to
Seaforth's Main Street intersec-
tion, where a video store was
most recently.
Neither owner has retail
experience, but Shirley has

Family Express features
science and educational toys, as
well as the popular Thomas the
Tank Engine, a big name in
toys these days and a Saturday
cartoon show. The showroom
is large and airy, taking up ap-
proximately 6,000 square -feet.
The Brookers say they got
the idea for the new store in
the early summer. It took them
about two months to fix up the
inside, build choo-choo train
shelving and open the doors
under their new sign.
They say the business is a
"big risk" but so far business
has been good.
