Legion busy with Remembrance Day Services
The Legion was very busy
this past week with
Remembrance services. On
Thursday we attended
services at Maplewood Manor
where Major Frank Golding
delivered the service to the
residents. We then proceeded
to Seaforth Manor where
again Major Golding
conducted the service reading
a prayer which was said at
the first Remembrance Day
service on Parliament Hill
Nov. 11, 1919. The colour
party was under Sgt. -at -arms
Errol Skillender and the
music for Last Post, etc., by
Gwen Harburn. The residents
at the Manor joined in the
singing of hymns. The Legion
would like to thank both
Maplewood and the Manor
for asking us to join them at
this time of year.
Last week I neglected to
mention The Brussels Pipe
Band which so ably escorted
us to the church service and

back to the Legion. We really
appreciate their assistance and
I apologize for omitting them.
On Friday morning, sixteen
members of the Legion and
Auxiliary attended the service
at the Seaforth District High
School. The students had
prepared a very moving
service with the assistance of
the, choir. P.R.O. Barbara
Scou spoke on behalf of the
Legion on 'Why we wear the
Poppy'. President John
Lansink introduced the
Legion and Auxiliary
members and two cadets who
joined us. Sgt. -at -arms Errol
Skillender was in charge of
the colour party. Also on
Friday, a service by the
students was held at the
public school. Once again
Major Golding read the poem
from 1919. The students and
choirs of the school presented
the program. The Legion
really appreciated being asked
to spate at these schools.
aS turday, Nov. 11, the
weatherman did not co-
operate and the Remembrance
service was held at Branch
156. A good crowd attended.
The stage had been decorated
with uniforms, etc., and
served as the cenotaph for the
laying of the wreaths and the
Poppy drop. Cadets stood on
each side with their rifles at
the 'rest on your arms
reverse' position. Major
Frank Golding conducted the
service and Sgt. -at -arms Errol
Skillerlder was in charge of
the colours and Mel
Melanson in charge of the
parade. After the conclusion
of the service, lunch was
served downstairs. The
Clinton Pipe Band arrived as
they usually do and
entertained us. Later in the
evening a potluck supper was
enjoyed by about 25 of us.
This was a nice way to end a
memorable day.
Youth Education chairman

Thanks to all the students
who participated. You are all

There will be another meat
draw held at the Branch on
Nov. 18.
The Early -bird Campaign is

Happy retirement party
A farewell and happy
retirement party was extended
to Ed Rowland, Dublin, who
retired as Plant Supervisor for
the Huron -Perth Catholic
Board. After 25 successful
and enjoyable years, a party
was held hosted by the
Rowland families where Ed
was visited by Huron -Perth
Board Office staff and many
friends. Ed, you will be
greatly missed, but all your
friends wish you many happy
years ahead!
Well, those Murray brothers
are at it again! They held
another of their six -hand
euchre games at their fourth -
oldest residence in North East
Hope Twp. We threw jacks
for partners - first, the oldest,
the secohd oldest, and the
fourth oldest became partners.
The fourth oldest, who was

table, yes, round cards to play
with. We played one hand
with those cards (you'd think
we were all drunk). Those
cards got disbanded for the
19th century!
After that episode, he gave
each one of us a beautiful
white shirt with our name on
the front of the shirt and on
the back was 'John E.
Murray, Sons, Euchre Pros'.
This shirt was given to us by
Cyril and Rose Marie Murray
and family. Thank you! By
followed by dinner at 7 pm.
Donation of non-perishable
food and mittens may be
made at the back of the
church, which will be given
to the Children's Aid for
Christmas. An invitation was
received from the St.
Patrick's C.W.L., Kinkora to
their Snowflake Bazaar on
Nov. 25 from 11 am to 3 pm
at the Kinkora School
Gymnasium.
We then joined with the St.
James C.W.L. ladies to hear
their guest speaker, Dianne
Goettler, MSc., R.D. of
Mitchell. Dianne showed
slides and gave a talk on
nutrition and dietary
recommendations for good
health cancer research.

Ross Bennett guest speaker for school service
The staff and pupils of
Walton Public School
extended their sympathies to
Laura Scott who's father died
on Nov. 3.
The school held an
assembly and each class did a
Remembrance Day
presentation. Ross Bennett
who represents the Brussels
Legion was guest speaker at
the assembly. He recalled a
young kid telling what
Remembrance Day was all
about. The kid had said that it
was for remembering those
who were killed in the war.
He went on to say that his
grandpa must have found a
good place to hide because he
came home safely from the
war. Mr. Bennett said that we
need to live peacefully
together and that it is up to
all of us to make this happen.
