Seaforth Centenaires
Flying Finn helps Cents break three -game losiiigstteak
Seaforth's "Flying Finn"
came through when it counted,
helping thd Centenaires end a
three -game losing spin with a
6-4 win over the Bombers at
Belmont Saturday night.
Dean Finnigan, back playing
competitive hockey after taking
last year off, "turned it up a
notch" by scoring twice and
setting up the Winner, all in the
last 5:04 of the game as the
Centenaires twice kept their
cool down two goals then
rebounded to hang on to
second place in the Morenz
Division of the Ontario Hockey
Association's Junior
"D"evelopment League.
That sets up what should be
a dandy doubleheader at the
Seaforth and District Com-
munity Centres this weekend.
The Seaforth juniors host the
undefeated and league -leading
Exeter Hawks at 8:30 Friday
on "Meet The Players Night",
then the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs
Sunday afternoon at 2:30.
The Hawks and Centenaires
last tangoed in Exeter two
weeks ago when Seaforth lost
in overtime, but had their hosts
on the ropes in the second half
of the game in front of by far
the largest crowd of this
season, rebounding from a 5-1
deficit with an explosive third
period. It is the closest Exeter
has come to losing so far this
season. But the Centenaires
hadn't played well since - until
the last five minutes of Satur-
day's game when the "Flying
Finn" vented his frustration by
leading the charge. Friday night
Seaforth suffered its first
home -ice loss of this season, 5 -
Boyd Devereaux picked
as top NHL prospect
A panel of media experts last
week picked 17 -year-old Boyd
Devereaux of Seaforth as their
top National Hockey League
prospect. He now stands fourth
in scoring on the Kitchener
Rangers, who selected him
fifth -overall in the first round
of last summer's Ontario Hock-
ey League draft.
Devereaux is now fourth in
rookie scoring in that premier
major junior league, with 15
points in 20 games from five
goals and 10 assists, bchind
three Europeans, all older:
Herb Vasiljevs of Guelph with
25 points, Alexandre Volchkov
of Barrie with 20 and Zdenek
Skorepa of Kingston who has
16 points.
The media panel evaluates
players on • their overall skill
Broomball
and ability and thzir chances of
being chosen high in the annual
upcoming NHL Entry Draft in
six segments. Last week's
tallies were for the fifth seg-
ment of voting. Votes are
tabulated based on an 8-7-6-5-
4-3-2-1 point system with 32
points the maximum a player
can receive. Devereaux got 31.
Last year's winner of the top
draft prospect award was Bryan
Berard from the Detroit
Whalers. Other winners have
included Eric Lindros (1990-
91) and Alexander Daigle
(1992-93).
A spokesman for the Rangers
says one of Boyd's goals has
come on the powerplay and he
has only 14 penalty minutes in
the 20 games he has played so
far this, season.
Grads win with sudden burst
GRADS 3 CYCLON 2
Cyclones take the Lead as
goals were scored by Mike
Dooreleyers and Adam
O'Neil with keen passing
from Mike. 'Oops', there go
the Grads with a sudden burst
of energy and they win the
game. Goals were scored by
Dana Bean, Mike Van Den
Heuvel and Al Wynja with
assistance from Mac O'Neil,
Tony Van Den Heuvel, and
Martin Wynja.
DUMPER 13 RAIDERS 0
'Bakers Dozen'- plenty of
goals were accumulated by
Brett Finlayson, Bob
McKenzie, Kevin Van Den
Neucker, Steve Eckert Jr.,
Jerry Wright, Mike Smale
and Bill Dale. Great passes
came from Gary Dill and
John Cairns, however, Jerry
played smart broomball as he
helped to set up awesome
passes to help achieve all the
extra goals. He is a fantastic
fellow team player who is
always considerate and caring
to help the next guy. Wow!
Raiders goalie has 'guts' or
maybe he just needs a suit of
armour as he stopped zillions
of shots. Unfortunately a few
zipped by. Mr. Toby Phillips
was outstanding as his fellow
team-mates tired out!
KNIGHTS 1 RUSTLERS 0
Rustlers' squad was a little
short on team-mates and had
to forfeit the game. Pressure
was on the Knights as Peter
DeGroot became the hero of
the game and scores a big
time goal for the 'win'.
ROYALS 2 EASY RIDER 4
Royals start the goal scoring
as Chris Talbot and Chuck
Mills pop in two quick goals.
But Riders 'pout' a little and
then come back the long road
and scored four goals.
Marksmen were 'hat trick
man' Laurence Vink and
'Jimmy' Butson for a single.
Great passing from Jerry
Zwcp and Jeff Hoelscher.
Great game fellows.
PERTH 0 PARR LINE 4
Perth Ladies have plenty of
esteem but just seem to be a
little short on goals. Parr Line
came out full force with a
solid line and single goals go
out to speedy Bonnie
O'Reilly, Glenda Chaput,
Heidi Elliott and old smoothie
Cheryl Kruse. Lots of help
came from. Lisa, Norah, and
Sandra and added support
came from Sue Ellen on the
bench!

Dave McLlwain of Seaforth
was the leading scorer for the
Cleveland Lumberjacks at the
close of last weekend's Inter-
national Hockey League action.
He has 23 points from 13 goals
and 10 assists.
Dean Finnigan
3 at the hands of the Lucan
Irish.
The Cents had been playing
"tight". Their powerplay was
tentative and ineffective and
their league -leading offence
wasn't connecting. They out -
shot the Bombers 68-36 Satur-
day, with 23 shots from range
in the second period, but only
had two "garbage" goals to
show for it and trailed 4-2 until
the third period.
The "Flying Finn" started
driving to the net with inten-
sity. On the winner, a mere 26
seconds after he tied it, Fin-
nigan powered down the right
wing through his defender,
drawing another man to him,
then fed Steve Mclnally in the
slot who had some space and
wasted no time simply over-
powering Bomber goaltender
Cliff Mask by putting the puck
upstairs hard off the mesh. On
the line's next shift, with Jason
Henderson on the other wing,
Finnigan wasn't fancy but
again wasn't waiting for things
to happen, adding an insurance
goal through shear hard work
by mucking about in close to
the Belmont net.
Jason Dunseith, Brent Hulley
and Kalen Carroll also scored
for Seaforth. All four of Bel-
mont's goals were scored on
the powerplay, throe by Jeremy
Valeriote. Goaltender Mask,
who did play a strong game
despite the official
scorekeeper's lenient shot
totals, is a rookie from Bel-
mont who played in the United
States last year.
Friday night at Seaforth, *the
Centenaires looked no match
for Lucan after the first two
minutes of the third period as
the Irish scored three
unanswered goals to win the
game going away. Veteran
captain Steve Matthews scored
twice and assisted on another
in that span. Lucan also hit
four posts in the game. The
Centenaires, who swept the
Irish two years ago in the
playoffs then their first match
in Seaforth last season, have
now lost 10 -straight games to
third-place Lucan. The have
